Job overview

A unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced pharmacy technician to join our established, friendly, and dynamic clinical pharmacy team at South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

As part of the senior operational team this exciting new post will form part of a wider restructure of the pharmacy service where you will have responsibility for the delivery of high quality services to inpatients at SLaM. This post provides the opportunity to use your organisational and consultation skills to provide excellent patient care on inpatient units as part of the multidisciplinary team as well as developing leadership, education and training skills.

Main duties of the job

§  Ensure a safe, efficient, and cost-effective medicines management service to SLaM inpatient units in Lambeth and Southwark boroughs.

§  Produce and maintain Medicine Management Technician (MMT) policies and SOPs in line with the Trust Medicines Policy.

§  Liaise with Education and Training leads to train and supervise Pre-registration Pharmacy Technicians (PTPTs), Trainee Pharmacists and Band 4/5 pharmacy technicians ensuring MMT standards are in line with the Trust’s expectations of a high-quality service.

§  To act as a practice supervisor in the training and education of PTPTs during their MMT rotation.

§  To supervise Pharmacy Technicians, Assistant Technical Officers and where appropriate, trainee pharmacists.

§  Ensure that the standards of service provided by the Pharmacy Department to inpatient units is of the highest standard and leads to the best possible outcomes for service users whilst maintaining cost saving efficiency.

§  Liaise with clinical and non-clinical leads with planning and implementation of MMT projects, including one-stop dispensing.

§  Develop a collaborative approach with inpatient service leads.

§  Development and critical analysis of service KPIs.

§  Provide support for the SLaM dispensaries.

§  Implement MMT initiatives in line with the Trust Digital systems including electronic prescribing and medicines administration (EPMA).

§  Ensure regular self-development with line manager.

We are a world leading Trust in research, working closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London. Our services include the Maudsley Hospital, Lambeth Hospital and Bethlem Royal Hospital. We are also part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre.

The pharmacy department provides a clinical and dispensing service to wards and community teams in Croydon, Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham across four hospital sites and a wide variety of community mental health teams. We also provide information about medication to both staff and patients to improve understanding and contribute to evidence based care. The post holder will be based at Maudsley Hospital.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. 1.       Maintain an excellent level of service provided by pharmacy to the Trust inpatient units.

     

    Ø  Update and maintain procedures and policies in line with the Trust EPMA system.

    Ø  Train and supervise PTPTs, trainee Pharmacists, Band 4/5 MMT Technicians, providing expertise advice and support on Trust MMT initiatives and procedures.

    Ø  Make regular spot checks on inpatient units and provide feedback to PTPT and MMT line managers.

    Ø  Organise medicines management audits and report audit results to Clinical Service Leads as required. Reflect on audit results and agree on procedural changes with line manager or Lead Clinical Pharmacist.

    Ø  Produce a clear and comprehensive MMT induction document for newly employed MMT staff. Keep induction records for auditing purposes when necessary.

    Ø  Communicate with other sites when patients are transferred / discharged.

    Ø  Ensure continuity of care when patients are discharged from inpatient wards to community settings.

    Ø  Contribute to the clinical governance and quality agenda of the department and the Trust.

    Ø  Take detailed and accurate medication histories from new patients on the specified wards and to train and assess the ability of other technicians to do so.                                                                                                                                                                                                                          

    2.       To participate in the work of the Pharmacy Department to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective supply of medication to patients ensuring compliance with Health and Safety and Medicines Legislation

    3.       To participate in Medicines Management initiatives in the Trust.

    4.       To work as an Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician and be able to check clinically screened prescriptions.

    5.       To lead on CQC safe and secure handling audits on inpatient units.

    6.       To be able to act independently in following department SOPs.

    7.       To dispense medication accurately and be able to decide when it is necessary to refer to the Senior Clinical Pharmacists.

    8.       Plan and develop a discharge counselling project for patients on SLaM inpatient units.

     

    9.       To act as a practice supervisor in the training and education of pre-registration pharmacy technicians during their MMT rotation.

    10.   To provide teaching and support to nursing and non-nursing staff regarding good administration practice, medicines usage and storage both internally and externally.

    11.   To participate in research and audit undertaken in pharmacy and, where appropriate, design audits relating to the MMT service.

    12.   To ensure that the principles of safe and secure handling of medicines are adopted and to take part in quality assurance systems for pharmaceutical services.

    13.   Complete department risk assessments when a risk has been identified. Regularly review and act on risk assessments.

    14.   Participate in the smooth transition of Lambeth wards from the Lambeth Hospital site to the newly developed Douglas Bennett House, at Maudsley Hospital.

    15.   To attend and participate in departmental education and training meetings.

    16.   To maintain a Continuing Professional Development portfolio

    17.   To communicate clearly and sensitively about patient medication issues both internally and externally.

    18.   To participate in the dispensary cover rota, when required to do so.

    19.   To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably requested by the Director of Pharmacy consistent with the responsibility of the post.

    20.   To take part in annual pharmacy stocktake

    21.   To plan, implement, maintain, and develop a one-stop supply service to inpatient units.

    22.   To plan, implement, maintain, and develop a ward-based technician service.

    23.   To participate in Saturday and Bank Holiday working, when required

    24.   To be successful in this role, you will need to be organised, motivated, have excellent communication and people skills as well as the ability to adapt quickly to new situations.

Person specification

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 Pharmaceutical Sciences or a recognised equivalent
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), with mandatory CPD
  • ACT (Accredited Checking Technician)
  • HEE Pharmacy Medicines Optimisation accreditation (or working towards) or equivalent relevant experience
Desirable criteria
  • Practice Supervisor accreditation
  • Management / supervisory qualification / experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Practicing pharmacy technician with sufficient post qualification hospital experience
  • Medicines Reconciliation Experience
  • Evidence of ability to work independently and proactively with limited supervision

Knowledge
