An exciting opportunity has arisen for a driven and experienced Gastroenterology and GI Oncology dietitian to join our team of 17 dietitians at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) site of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the gastroenterology and oncology dietetic service for patients requiring specialist input for gastrointestinal cancers, pancreatic disease and complex nutrition support e.g. eating disorders, functional gut disorders.
This is a 0.8wte Band 7 post.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with members of various multi-disciplinary teams, including gastroenterology and oncology with the opportunity for development of an out-patient service to support patients newly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
The post holder will also support the provision of parenteral nutrition as part of the Nutrition Team alongside specialists from Pharmacy and Gastroenterology, as well as providing support for the Critical Care caseload during periods of cover. Strong skills in inpatient artificial nutrition support are required with experience of managing complex patients, as part of an effective MDT.
Line management experience is also desirable as the successful candidate will be managing a Band 6 Dietitian working in the gastroenterology service, who predominantly manages IBD. This role sits within the adult dietetic team at PRUH and there will be an opportunity to also provide cover to the stroke and critical care unit.
As well as involvement in service development projects and audits, the post holder will be expected to assist in planning the strategic development of the service as well as providing supervision for other members of staff within the dietetic department. We also undertake student training and you would play an active role in student supervision. The department supports flexible working under the Kings flex system.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of work in compliance with the ethical code of practice set out by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
2. To actively manage a caseload of gastroenterology patients, assessing and managing their dietary needs while working closely with other members of the multi-disciplinary
team.
3. To attend appropriate clinics and multidisciplinary meetings to provide expert evidence based nutritional support and advice to clinicians, patients and carers.
4. To work with the dietetic and multi-disciplinary team responsible for the development and provision of evidence based dietetic service to the patients, carers and staff of King’s College Hospital in Gastroenterology.
5. Formulate and deliver individual dietetic treatment plans for patients based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of a wide range of dietetic treatments.
6. To contribute to the development of written information for patients and the maintenance of up to date and educational literature.
7. To communicate and liaise with the community multidisciplinary team regarding nutrition related prescriptions and nutritional care of outpatients. Providing appropriate information and education to clinicians, patients and carers.
8. Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
9. Evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment regimens as required.
10. To manage clinical risk within own patient caseload.
11. Work within Trust clinical guidelines and to have good working knowledge of national and local standards and monitor quality of practice as appropriate.
12. To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with British Dietetic Association (BDA) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) standards of practice.

Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc / Post graduate diploma in Nutrition & Dietetics
- HCPC registered dietitian
Desirable criteria
- A recognised and appropriate post-graduate course
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous dietetic experience in gastroenterology / GI Oncology in the acute NHS setting
- Previous gastroenterology dietetic experience in the outpatient setting
- Experience in provision of parenteral nutrition
- Experience in Critical Care dietetics
- Experience in the clinical supervision of students
- Experience of multidisciplinary team working
