Ophthalmic Imaging is a specialised form of Medical Photography. This imaging specialism is dedicated to the recording and treatment of many disorders of the eye, both common and rare.

Moorfields Eye Hospital has had an Imaging Service since the late 1960s and to this day, Medical Imaging continues to provide a Gold Standard service across a broad range of clinical imaging techniques.

This department is one of the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom, and plays a critical role in supporting the main aim of Moorfields, to be the Centre of Excellence in Ophthalmic care.

Our dedicated team of skilled Ophthalmic Healthcare Science practitioners hold a broad range of expertise in providing a comprehensive imaging service.

To work effectively in a team to provide reliable and high quality imaging service to all patients and service users at MEH NHS Foundation Trust Bedford.

The post holder will be responsible for departmental education, professional development and training opportunities for HCAs; including being an assessor for staff undergoing NVQ training and signing off different competencies. Work with all members of the multi-professional team (nursing, medical imaging, medical, admin, allied healthcare professionals and all members of the management team).

 

The post holder will also be responsible for setting up and running of any new virtual clinics in the department.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Line manage a group of HCAs, managing their annual appraisals and Personal Development Plans are in place for each member of staff
  •  Undertake a range of digital angiography and imaging procedures requiring expertise underpinned by theoretical knowledge of the principles underlying fundus photography, digital angiography, auto fluorescence imaging and optical coherence tomography
  • Making judgements involving a range of facts which require analysis and comparison to optimise images obtained during digital angiography (e.g. strategies to overcome small pupils, eye movement, cataract, blinking or a combination of these during fluorescein angiography
  • Follow established departmental policies for imaging techniques and be guided by standard operating procedures and good practice when performing imaging tasks. When performing complex imaging tasks, refer to more senior members of the team for guidance
  • Perform retinal imaging and image analysis using current standard techniques
  • Slit lamp imaging of anterior segment of the eye using tropical stains as appropriate
  • Clinical imaging of the external eye and ocular Adnex
  • Continuously review work to maintain and improve quality of imaging performed
  • Identify the knowledge and skills needed for successful personal development
  • Undertake all mandatory training including instillation of dilating drops.
  • Provide computer graphic services and operate several information systems relating to imaging. Assist medical staff in downloading clinical images and printing, and help with PowerPoint presentations
  • Well-developed physical skills (manual dexterity) to fulfil duties. These are needed to capture in focus images during angiography Responsibility for the safe use of expensive and highly complex imaging equipment.
  • Uphold quality initiatives that improve ‘customer care’ and enhance the interface between staff, patients and visitors.
  • To develop within the framework of a personal and professional development plan as agreed with your manager.
  • To assist the Sisters and Senior Charge Nurse in developing a culture that is challenging, stimulating, rewarding and supportive
