We have an opportunity for a psychologist or CBT therapist to join our vibrant and respected Early Intervention Service (covering Bedfordshire and Luton).    We have team bases in both Bedford and Luton, and the work requires us to be able to travel around the county.   As the service is for people experiencing a first episode of psychosis and their families, the post-holder will have experience, knowledge and skills  in psychological formulation, assessment and therapies for psychosis and related experience.  The post-holder will be able to demonstrate training and experience in providing CBT for Psychosis/Bipolar Disorder.  

You will join a large well-integrated multi-disciplinary team.  The psychological therapies workforce are immersed in the MDT and include 3 Psychologists, CBT Therapists, Assistant Psychologists and Trainee Psychologists.

The post holder will provide specialist psychological assessments, formulations and therapies for people experiencing psychosis, specialist risk assessments and advice on risk management, and provide psychological advice and consultation to others involved in service user care.  They will ensure that all members of the multidisciplinary team have access to a psychologically based framework for understanding clients through the provision of advice, consultation and the dissemination of psychological research and theory.  

The clinical work is undertaken in a range of inpatient and community resources including the client’s own home.   

The post holder will provide specialist teaching and supervision and advice concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment of this client group.  They will regularly attend multi-disciplinary team meetings.  The post holder will utilise research skills for audit, policy, research and service development within the service as a whole and specifically for psychology within the service.

The post holder will participate in CPD and other developmental activities, keeping up to date with relevant psychological research and national guidance.  They will attend clinical, professional and managerial supervision.

Education/ Qualification

  • Doctorate in Clinical/Counselling Psychology or equivalence and able to demonstrate eligibility for BPS CPsychol (Chartered Psychologist) and HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist. Or Postgraduate level training in CBT for Psychosis and accreditation as a practitioner/therapist with the relevant accrediting body (BABCP).

  • Further training or qualifications in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice.

Experience

  • Experience providing specialist psychological assessment/formulation and treatments across a wide variety of client groups, presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the range of care settings, maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the treat of physical abuse.
  • Experience in working in multidisciplinary settings and representing a psychological perspective in teams and services.
  • Experience of providing specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients who are experiencing psychosis and at risk of experiencing psychosis.

  • Experience of providing teaching, training and/or professional and clinical supervision.
  • Experience of the application of psychological interventions in different cultural contexts
  • Experience in contributing to service development, redesign and improvements in secondary mental health services

Knowledge & Skills

  • Able to draw upon a theoretical knowledge base in the analysis of highly complex facts and situations, requiring sustained and intense concentration, to arrive at appropriate formulation and compare and select from a range of treatment options.
  • Knowledge of the psychological theory, practice and research relating to psychosis.
  • An in depth knowledge and skills in applying clinical risk assessment and management in own and others’ clinical caseload
  • Able to communicate at a high level verbally and in writing highly complex, technical and sensitive information to clients, families, carers, and a range of professionals and lay people within and outside the NHS.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups
  • Able to use skills and knowledge to design and implement service evaluations.
