Job overview
Bedfordshire Talking Therapies (BTT) offers individual, couple and group therapy for those struggling with anxiety and/or depression. We require a suitably qualified and experienced Therapist / Psychologist to work as a Deputy Clinical Lead.
Applicants will be accredited with a professional body and have extensive experience of delivering therapeutic interventions. Applicants will have a minimum of 2 years’ experience of being in a leadership role and must be enthusiastic about delivering high quality talking therapies to service users and able to work autonomously and creatively.
Applicants will be responsible for working with the clinical lead to enhance the clinical quality within the service. This will include developing strategies to manage KPI’s across the service and to focus on performance within the team.
Applicants will be one of two Deputy Clinical Leads working together and alongside the Team Leaders to ensure the effective running of the service. Applicants will also be given specific projects to run and co-ordinate.
As a Talking Therapies service we seek to provide ease of access for service users and therefore, some of your working week may be located in a community base/may require flexible working. You will also be expected to be able to travel across the county regularly.

Main duties of the job
The role of the Deputy Clinical Lead is to deliver effective Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and to support the growth, development and strategy of the service provision.
The post holder will provide line management and clinical support for the Team Leaders in the service. The post holder will also provide clinical supervision for Team Leaders and therapists in the service. The post holder will be responsible for assisting in the recruitment, placement and supervision of various positions across the service including trainees. They will hold a small clinical caseload.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
- Ensuring the systematic provision of high quality CBT/Relational therapy to individuals and groups within a wide range of settings (including GP surgeries, community settings and therapy centres).
- Provide clinical co-working with other health professionals.
- The provision of generic mental health assessments to identify all groups of adult mental disorders.
- The provision of specialist assessments for suitability for Talking Therapies.
- The provision of assessment that identify if the Service User would benefit from alternative mental health treatments (including medication and other psychological treatments), weigh up the relative advantages and advise the service user accordingly.
- Act independently and autonomously on behalf of the service to deal with complex urgent cases, including patients presenting with high levels of emotional distress and imminent risk to self and others.
- Liaise where appropriate with other professional groups to effectively communicate assessments and facilitate transfer of care to an appropriate professional.
- Conducting risk assessments, preparing risk management plans and initiating appropriate action where indicated (including requests for mental health act assessments).
- Elicit, record, collate and communicate outcome data of your clinical activity and all those you supervise to both the Service Manager and Clinical Lead.
- Co-ordinating, participating in, and contribute to supervision with professional colleagues.
- Promote and contribute to the development and maintenance of a healthy therapeutic culture within the Bedfordshire Talking Therapies amongst colleagues and Service Users.
- Develop and engage in your own CPD, including active engagement in and use of clinical supervision.
- Provide high quality, specialist supervision to a range of practitioners including trainee, newly qualified and qualified.
- Provide high quality case management to a range of practitioners including trainee, newly qualified and qualified.
- Support the public & professional educational role of the service by delivering training programs (which may include lectures, seminars, tutorials, experiential workshops) to other professionals, carers and to other groups as indicated.
- Provide consultation to and communicate as appropriate with external agencies (including housing, police, local authority, employers etc.).
- Liaise with other psychological therapy services in order to work jointly to improve provision of psychological services to the residents of Bedfordshire.
- Proactively develop robust professional relationships with General Practice staff supporting the active integration of psychological therapy provision into primary care.
- Develop and maintain good professional relationships with mental health workers in primary and secondary care.
- Exercise personal responsibility for the systematic clinical governance of professional practice in your own practice and of your supervisees.
- Lead in an area of specialist clinical work: provide expert knowledge in this area and take responsibility for proactively disseminating this expertise within the service.

- Carry out assessments and appraisals of Qualified and trainee Therapists.
- Deputise as required for the Clinical Lead at meetings internal and external to the Trust.
- Be aware of and comply with the policies, procedures and standards of service in the Bedfordshire Talking Therapies Service and East London Foundation Trust – in particular the service operational manual, recommending updates for this as indicated.
- To fulfil the requisite code of conduct and follow ethical guidelines in your professional work.
- Any other duties necessary to the smooth running of the service and falling within what might reasonably be considered the duties of a Deputy Lead.
Managerial
- Provide high quality line management to colleagues across the service.
- Actively contribute to and support the integration of clinical governance in the Bedfordshire Talking Therapies service, leading on an area of work as directed.
- Ensure personal development plans/appraisals are up to date and acted on within the service.
- Monitor and manage clinical hours offered across the service provision.
- Support the team leaders to complete performance reviews with therapists.
- Be an active member of the senior management team including attending and contributing to weekly senior team meetings.
- Provide Clinician of the Day and evening cover duties as required including offering cover for other senior team members when they are away.
- Co-ordinate and liaise between different staff groups including Trainees, Qualified Therapists and Team Leaders ensuring connectedness.
- Liaise directly with the training organisation for the high intensity trainees
- Liaise with other supervisors to prepare the weekly supervision schedule for trainees, qualified staff and supervisors.
- Manage the qualified therapists as a team including on-going training of the team in improving clinical skills as part of an annual training package.
- Deal with conflict within the team, external agencies and issues surrounding conflict of interest in the provision of therapy to patients.
- Plan modifications to the service on a continuous basis in order to ensure that the service best meets the needs of service users under the supervision of the Service Manager and Lead Clinician.
- Conduct disciplinary investigations in line with trust training where requested within the East London Foundation Trust
- Apply trust policies on sickness, absence and capability including preparation for formal hearings where appropriate.
- Where required, carry out investigations, deal with grievances and conduct disciplinary procedures, according to the Trust policies.
- Support all recruitment in the service.
- Use data provided by the IT system (and reports provided on individual Qualified Therapists) to monitor key performance indicators. (These will include hours of contact, DNA rates, supervision levels and clinical outcome).
- Liaise with individuals and training organisation with clinical lead in developing and delivering training for Qualified Therapists.
- Act as a manager for specific management roles within the service, such as managing the group programme, managing the Wait Lists, and managing the SPoR team.
Support & resources
· The post holder will have clinical and line management supervision.
· The post holder will liaise with the Service Manager on matters regarding the day to day running of the service and its impact.
· The post holder will be a member of the senior team with responsibility and authority to analyse, propose options and effect changes as necessary within the service.

Education/ Qualification/ Training
Essential criteria
- Accredited Counselling/Clinical Psychologist or Recognised and accredited CBT/Relational trained therapist.
- Recognised formal training in clinical supervision
Experience
Essential criteria
- A minimum of two years of being a Team Leader/Lead Clinician of a team in a healthcare setting
- Experience working with a wide range of psychological problems over a moderate period of time.
- Experience working with Service Users who have anxiety / depression.
- Experience of working with patients from mild to complex conditions
- Experience as a supervisor
- Experience in line management of clinical staff including managing HR issues.(need not be therapists)
Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
- Willingness, skills and abilities to contribute to and to participate in the service development process
- Knowledge of generic mental health care
- Knowledge pertinent to effective risk assessment and management
