An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, based at the Bethlem Adolescent Unit (BAU). This is to provide parental leave cover for the current substantive consultant. The post is for 9 months, commencing in August 2024.

The BAU is currently collocated with the Maudsley Adolescent Unit service, on the Bethlem site, prior to their move into the new Pears Maudsley building. The separation of the 2 services will take place during the successful applicant’s tenure. The successful candidate will be S12/AC approved and provide clinical leadership to the service, and take consultant responsibility for an increasing number of patients (both informal and detained), from the current 6, in the combined service, to 8/10 when the BAU is fully individuated again as a service.

The role is full time with 7.5 DCC sessions and 2.5 SPA sessions, but those seeking a less than full time role are encouraged to discuss such arrangements.

This post includes direct clinical activity and SPAs of structured professional activities, during which the post holder will contribute to service development, clinical governance and quality improvement, in addition to completing continuous professional development and pursuing other professional activities.

The main responsibilities of the post include:

  • Assessment and management of children and young people, and to provide psychiatric input for both routine and emergency clinical care.
  • To carry out mental health & risk assessments on children & young people, including with regards to the use of the MHA, as appropriate, and to support the multi-disciplinary team in managing these situations effectively.
  • To assume responsibility for own case list and case management of children and families, in partnership with the MDT
  • To use pharmacological interventions, as appropriate, in partnership with children and their families and networks of care.
  • Supervision of junior medical staff as required.

The Trust is a leading mental health service provider working in partnership with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience as part of the King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre.

There are excellent opportunities for professional development including management, training, research, and audit experience. There is also opportunity for teaching locally within the service to multi-disciplinary and medical colleagues, to post-graduates at King’s College London, and to psychiatry trainees on the Maudsley/SLaM training scheme

Key Responsibilities:

1) Assessment and management of children and young people, and to provide psychiatric input for both routine and emergency clinical care.

2) Supervision of junior medical staff. It is expected the post holder will be an accredited clinical supervisor, or will become so if not already

3) Attending and chairing clinical meetings as timetabled.

4) Liaising and communicating with the MDT, other professionals, teams and agencies

5) Strong clinical leadership

6) Provision of advice to other CAMHS teams.

7) Participation in peer and group supervision meetings.

8) Participation in training of medical students, psychiatric trainees and multidisciplinary staff.

9) Adherence to agreed job plan and appraisal procedures set by the Trust.

10) Maintain GMC registration, maintain a License to Practice and participate in CPD to remain in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists. If required, the post holder will be supported to join or develop a local peer group for CPD purposes.

11) Maintain Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval. If the appointee is not Section 12 or AC approved, they will be expected to become so as soon as possible

12) Cover for colleagues is prospective.

Other elements of the role are to:

  • Ensure that electronic patient clinical records relating to post holder’s work are well maintained and meet Trust standards for documentation and communication with referrers and users are met
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are implemented to safeguard and protect children within the service and throughout the CPA process
  • Help maintain a clinical database and keep all other records and statistics as necessary and required
  • Participate in meetings and other management meetings as appropriate to the post holder’s responsibilities
  • Apply quality standards to all work undertaken, in line with Trust Clinical Governance policies
  • Act with integrity, honesty and probity at all times
  • Assist in or lead research and evaluation in line with the departments research ambitions and plans
  • Take part in and lead audit projects when appropriate.
  • To participate in the investigation of Serious Incidents and Complaints as a senior investigator on an occasional but regular basis.
  • The successful candidate will have an office. They have their own desk, computer (desktop and work laptop) and telephone (landline and work mobile) with access to IT support. The service has a full time administrator.
  • Non car drivers can access transport for essential clinical journeys. Travel expenses for essential clinical journeys are paid for by the service
  • Study leave can be requested through the Trust study leave procedures in accordance with the contractual entitlement of 30 days study and professional leave with pay and expenses within each three-year period.
  • The successful candidate will be assisted in joining a peer group. There is a large consultant body and a range of peer groups which can cater to specific areas of interest, and well as general requirements for CPD. There is an expectation they will register/be registered with the RCPsych CPD submissions service and maintain a Certificate of Good Standing.
  • The successful candidate can access support and advice from a range of colleagues to support them in their role, reflecting the range of expertise available within SLAM. They will be working alongside experienced inpatient colleagues and can seek support and advice from the Lead Clinician, or from experts in relevant outpatient services
