Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within SLAM  for a painter/handyman to join the  Estates team. The Trust has four main sites and community properties, therefore applicants should be able to arrange their work, parts and materials and carry out tasks in a safe and tidy manner.

To maintain continuity of service there will be times when extra hours, altered work patterns/duties is required.  The post-holder must have a good general knowledge of domestic and commercial buildings.

Main duties of the job

  1. To undertake planned preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance and emergency works as demanded by a Hospital of this type. Use all skills, experience and knowledge ensuring safe working methods to carry out maintenance tasks in the most cost effective way for the Trust
  2. To understand the workings of buildings, engineering services and systems in NHS/Trust premises. Ensuring that they are maintained to a high standard and that all plant and equipment are utilised in a safe and efficient manner
  3. To carry out work in a timely manner as requested using the current works requisition system and ensuring that any associated information is recorded.
  4. To work as part of a departmental team and where necessary support colleagues of all levels and disciplines as required.
  5. To provide a maintenance service to all Trust buildings, off site properties and be able to work unsupervised.
  6. To maintain continuity of service there will be times when extra hours, altered work patterns, duties or location are required.
  7. To keep up to date with current legislation and attend training courses as directed by Estate Management
  8. To be able to work safely in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act, current guidance and to follow any other safety policies as issued by the Trust

Working for our organisation

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) provide the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK as well as substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London and are part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. There are very few organisations in the world that have such wide-ranging capabilities working with mental illness. Our scope is unique because it is built on three major foundations: care and treatment, science and research, and training.

SLaM employ around 5000 staff and serve a local population of 1.1 million people. We have more than 230 services including inpatient wards, outpatient and community services. Currently, provide inpatient care for approximately 5,300 people each year and treat more than 45,000 patients in the community in Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; as well as substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This job is for a  Handyperson/ Painter who has a good general knowledge of domestic and commercial buildings. In your duties of maintenance there will be statutory checks in line with Approved Code of Practice (Building Regulations, HBN & HTM). You will be expected to work on your own initiative as well as working within a team.

You will need to knowledge of building structures and fabric as well as fire compartmentalisation and fire door maintenance. Applicants should be able to arrange their work, parts and materials and carry out tasks in a safe and tidy manner.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ-2 or equivalent relevant qualification or studying towards NVQ-level 2
  • Health and Safety qualification in one of the following: • Safe use of ladders, • Mobile Elevated Working Platform trained (MEWP) • Safe use and assembly of mobile scaffold towers (PASMA) • COSHH • Manual Handling
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ-3 or equivalent relevant qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • NHS (healthcare) experience in a similar role
  • Experience of working within a commercial or Estates maintenance environment
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a mental healthcare environment

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good knowledge of associated trades
  • Knowledge of painting preparation techniques, paints and finish.
  • Knowledge of fire door inspections
  • Good communication skills
  • To have basic computer skills
Desirable criteria
  • • Knowledge of the compliance demands in healthcare premises
  • • Current clean driving licence or training towards obtaining a driving licence
