Main duties of the job

We are seeking to appoint a consultant in General Paediatrics, with special interest in Diabetes and Endocrine at Barnet Hospital. This is a new post and is in response to the rising demands of the department.

Working for our organisation

The Paediatric Department consists of a Children’s Ward (24 beds), Pluto day unit (6 beds) and Paediatric outpatient clinic. The department also provides Level 1 POSCU services at this site. The Level 2 Neonatal Unit has 30 cots, 4 of which are equipped for intensive care, 6 High Dependency and a 4-bed transitional care ward.

 The Children’s ward (Galaxy) accepts acute paediatric admissions, planned admissions for investigations and surgical cases (both acute and elective work).  There are approximately 3,000 medical admissions annually to the ward which operates a ‘Consultant of the week’ system. 

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be a member of the General Paediatric team, contributing to attending weeks and non-resident on call, on an 1:13 rota. The postholder will also be part of an established Diabetes team and will carry out Diabetes and Endocrine clinics at Barnet and Chase Farm hospitals, as well as participate in Diabetes MDT Meetings and the out of hours diabetes rota.

 The Diabetes and Endocrine team is lead by Dr Esther Freeman, who is cross-site Lead for this service

Education & professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On the specialist register of the General Medical Council (GMC) for Paediatrics; or
  • Registered with the GMC and within 6 months of being accepted for the specialist register for paediatrics at the time of interview
  • Membership/Fellowship of Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health / equivalent
  • Paediatric Diabetes SPIN or equivalent
  • APLS/NLS provider
  • Level 3 Child Protection training
Desirable criteria
  • APLS/NLS InstructoER

Experience / Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience in Paediatric Diabetes and Endocrine subspecialty.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the challenges facing the service
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the environment in which the service needs to be delivered

Skills and aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take independent and full responsibility of clinical care of paediatric patients.
  • Ability to lead and support multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
