The Community Dental Service provides dental treatment for those patients who have difficulty in obtaining treatment from other services. It provides a dental public health and treatment service acting in a complimentary way to the hospital and general practitioner services.
The provision of comprehensive oral health care for client groups in line with the Service’s contractual requirements.
Main duties of the job
To provide specialist care and advice to those adult groups we are commissioned to see following integrated care pathways and support colleagues to do likewise. Support the Clinical Lead, Service Manager and Dental Team, in service development for all areas of SCD.
The post holder will be expected to cover 10 session per week that will be made up of; 1-2 GA’s sessions, 1 admin session, 7-8 clinical sessions which may include general practice/DOMS/iv sedation. Flexile for discussion with successful candidate

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
a) Undertake thorough examination and assessment of patients and use the most appropriate restorative, periodontal and surgical treatments
b) Plan and manage care for a range of patients including those where there are complex medical co-morbidities or patients require involvement with other professionals/carers to resolve complex patient management issues
c) Provide preventative and clinical dental services to adults with special needs in primary and secondary care settings
d) Lead other practitioners and develop a teamwork approach to care with other dentists
e) Co-ordinate the clinical work of senior and community dental practitioners in relation to dental services for this client group
f) Provide treatment under General Anaesthesia and Conscious Sedation combined with any associated pre - operative assessment and post operative care
g) Undertake appropriate assessment of patients to determine the need for specialist advice.
h) To be responsible, on a daily basis, for the efficient organisation of the clinic and to maintain all equipment used in the surgery
i) Provide professional advice and support to primary care dentists
j). Provide care which requires the application of sound ethical and professional principles in a more complex clinical, social and intellectual context
k). Participate and lead in areas of appraisal, clinical supervision, CPD and clinical audit activities.
l). Deal professionally with issues of poor/under performance in colleagues in line with the policy
m). Maintain up-to date knowledge and skills in the field of clinical dentistry and ensure care is provided in accordance with evidence informed practice
n). Participate in quality assurance and clinical governance programmes
o). Share responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment complying with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act
p). Plan and visit secure facilities/specialist residential care facilities
q). To organise and lead on best interest meetings across multiple disciplines

Education
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GDC
- On the GDC Specialist Register in SCD or will work towards CCST
- Must be on a PCT Performer list
Desirable criteria
- Relevant Higher degree e.g.- Diploma of Membership SCD or one or more of the following MSc, FDS RCS, MFDS RCS, MSCD RCS(Edin), DSCD RCS (Eng).
- Experience within Community Dental setting

Essential criteria
- Evidence of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate dentists
- Knowledge and experience of UK NHS system
- Ability to travel extensively across the district including the transportation of equipment as and when required to meet the needs and demands of the service with own vehicle
Desirable criteria
- Varied clinical experience in primary and secondary dental care
- Advanced IV sedation
- Further qualification or training in education or supervision
