An opportunity has arisen within the trauma and orthopaedic department for an experienced, enthusiastic nurse to become a band 6 Senior Ambulatory Care Nurse. The aim is to provide cover 7 days a week to new trauma patients and ensure they are managed and treated within a timely manner.

The role demands that you work on-call alongside the orthopaedic nursing team and support the on-call orthopaedic surgical team in the assessment and admission of orthopaedic trauma presenting to Pilgrim and Lincoln Hospital. This includes planning a programme of care for patients from admission to theatre and beyond.

The post holder will ideally have a minimum of two years orthopaedic experience at band 5 within a trauma or orthopaedic environment. Extended roles such as ECG, cannulation and venepuncture are desirable.

It is essential that the applicant have sound management and organisational skills, with a calm and professional manner when dealing with the often stressful service demands. They should be proactively managing and helping to develop the orthopaedic trauma services.

Applicants are expected to be flexible in working long days, early and late shifts including weekends but not nights.

This job advert is for 2.63 WTE based at LCH and 2.63 WTE based at PHB, although an element of cross cover will be required in incidences of annual leave

The Trauma Assessment Unit (TAU) will provide a 7 day service;  providing a first point of contact and comprehensive triage and clinical assessment to patients and/or their carers/relatives resulting in a safe and appropriate clinical decision and plan of care. 

The team will be responsible for health triage and assessment of ambulant individuals presenting with an orthopaedic complaint, including supporting aversion of unnecessary hospital admission through assessment and treatment of individuals, assessing complex and specialist needs in order to assist the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. 

Referrals are received from Accident & Emergency departments, Urgent Treatment Centres, Out of Hours Services, GP and ambulance services across Lincolnshire.
The need for a permanent trauma assessment unit identifies the following benefits: 
• Avoids unnecessary admittances to hospital; significantly improving the patient experience and reducing the risk of hospital acquired illnesses and injuries
• Improves the flow from the Emergency Department, supporting the Trust’s 4-hour access target
• Improves the availability for inpatient beds, improving elective throughput which will in turn increase income
• Creates and enhances modern and forward-thinking nursing
