Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified Occupational therapist to join the Perinatal Team.

We would welcome applications from B6 or Occupational therapists who are wishing to develop, we would be happy to consider this post for a development role of B5 to B6.

The post would be covering the Boston & Grantham area, base will be discussed at interview.

The post would ideally suit someone who has experience of working within the community.

Experience of working with women who have moderate to severe mental health problems would be desirable.

Experience of Perinatal is not essential as training would be given to the successful Candidate. All new staff have a robust and comprehensive 6 week induction within the team which includes shadowing opportunities to the whole team and support from existing B6 Occupational Therapist within the team.

You will be working with a full MDT, working collaboratively in developing and expanding the OT pathway and providing both 1:1 and group programme for women under the service.

You will be providing OT assessments, advice and consultation to patients, MDT and other services.

Your role will be OT specific alongside assessments on behalf of the team of all patients.

The service is delivered through a full MDT approach providing comprehensive assessment, treatment for women who are from 13 weeks pregnant and up to 24 months post-natal.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide comprehensive assessment and treatment to women referred to the Perinatal Mental Health Team, and will be required to deliver interventions/treatment to patients whilst under care of the Team. The post holder will provide specific occupational therapy interventions and professional advice and support to other members of the multi-disciplinary team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a high standard of clinical care ensuring safe and effective assessment, treatment and comprehensive discharge planning using highly developed clinical reasoning skills and appropriate assessment tools. This will include a balance of both generic and specific OT work.

To work Monday-Friday 9-5pm

To delegate aspects of the patient treatment plan to other members of the team, whilst maintaining overall responsibility for patients’ mental health care, where appropriate.

To ensure the clinical caseload and clinical practice of occupational therapists in the team is of the highest standard of clinical care.

To manage referrals and service delivery in accordance with and in order to contribute towards the attainment of Service/Trust productivity requirements.

To communicate and liaise with others to ensure appropriate assessments, interventions and reviews are in place.

Work with individuals to assess their mental health, recognise mental illness and identify their related needs and circumstances; and enable them and/or their care givers to understand, manage and where appropriate change their behaviour to facilitate discharge.

Plan, implement, review and improve interventions to meet people’s identified needs and manage their inherent risk to facilitate discharge.

To assess carers’ and family’s needs and signpost or refer them to the relevant support.

Protect people from abuse, neglect and harm.

Enable individuals to develop independent living skills to facilitate discharge to their residence of choice.

To work collaboratively and promote effective working relationships with members of the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring effective and appropriate clinical decision-making within the

To maintain accurate and timely clinical records and to co-ordinate and monitor those of the team.

To adhere to HCPC code of professional conduct and ethics, plus associated legislation.

To develop clinical practice having due regard to guidelines (for example N.I.C.E.)

To demonstrate empowering leadership skills within the team and seek opportunities in local and national area as to promote and develop the profession.

To participate in Clinical Governance activities, including: induction, supervision, personal development review, health and safety, risk management and audit.

Develop effective and supportive links with other health and social care staff to create networks that improve the pathway of care as patients are discharged acute services

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Currently Occupational Therapist
  • Evidence of specialised continued professional training in clinical practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Training in Cognitive disability model
  • Training in AMPS
  • Management training
  • APPLE accreditation
  • Mentorship Module (degree level)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience of working with adults with complex needs or adults with mental health needs and skills that is transferable.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with women who have become unwell during the ante/postnatal period.

Essential criteria
  • Sound knowledge of national agenda for perinatal mental health.
  • Highly developed clinical reasoning skills
  • Highly developed skills in occupational therapy assessment and treatment
  • Sound knowledge of clinical/risk assessment and understanding of Information Governance principles.
  • Highly developed communication skills.
  • Excellent understanding of the therapeutic relationship and boundaries
  • Delegation whilst maintaining overall responsibility for patients care, where appropriate
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead a clinical team.
  • Highly motivated & able to engage with patients & carers to improve outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently and collectively.
