Are you interested in becoming an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Trauma Orthopaedics?

We are excited to offer an opportunity within Fracture Clinic at the Leicester Royal Infirmary for a committed and enthusiastic individual to join our team, working as a Trauma Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP).

This post is essential to trauma provision in Fracture Clinic with the ACP working autonomously; assessing, implementing, evaluating treatment and care, and discharging patients. Clinical skills will include manipulation of fractures and minor surgical procedures within the Emergency setting. The post will also see you providing expert advice to the Emergency Department.

Full training in the Musculoskeletal requirements of this role will be provided and delivered in partnership with Leicester Medical School as well as in – house training and assessment.

Main duties of the job

Virtual Review of Referrals - Able to safely virtually review patients that have been referred from the Emergency Department, GP surgeries or other Healthcare providers and make independent decisions in relation to plans of care.

Urgent Review of Patients - Able to safely assess, examine, diagnose and implement management of patients care at initial presentation. Including but not exclusive to, requesting of diagnostic examinations, prescribing and making an appropriate/safe plan of care in the best interests of the patient.

Outpatient Clinic Appointments - Able to safely assess, examine, diagnose and implement management of patients care in Outpatient Clinic appointments. Including but not exclusive to, clinical procedures applicable to role, issuing of Fit notes and making an appropriate/safe plan of care in the best interests of the patient.

The post holder will be required to work with a high degree of autonomy and complex decision making underpinned by a Masters level award. This encompasses the four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research.

Collaborative working with the Multi-Disciplinary Team, including the Orthopaedic Consultant body.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To accept clinical responsibility for undertaking the comprehensive assessment of a caseload of patients, including those with a complex presentation, in line with evidence- based practice, legislation, policies and procedures. Using investigative and analytical skills, review and interpret all information available, utilising a systematic process of reasoning to make a differential diagnosis.

Provide treatment plans for patients that are consistent with the outcomes of assessment and the most probable diagnoses using current clinical pathways where required in order to facilitate timely, quality, patient care and / or appropriate onward referral.

Where appropriate, initiate diagnostic tests, interpret and act upon results and provide advice to members of the multi-disciplinary team on patient treatment. Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions/treatments and makes any necessary modification.

Practice autonomously in planning and implementing treatment and care, undertaking advanced clinical practice that has been agreed with the senior nursing, midwifery, therapy and medical teams within the specialty.

To use an extended scope of practice beyond own profession recognising any limitations in knowledge, referring to senior medical staff or Senior Advanced Practitioners when scope of practice is exceeded.

Maintain a safe environment for patients, relatives and staff, and adhering to infection prevention and control policies.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registration on relevant part of the register with the NMC or HCPC with no restrictions on practice
  • Master’s degree level education meeting the requirements of the national framework for Advanced Level Practice
  • Study/knowledge relevant to speciality.
  • Have completed a Practice Assessor preparation day and have recent experience in supporting learners in the workplace and supervising their progress and assessing their practice.
  • Post basic qualification in speciality
  • Research module as part of Master’s degree
  • Independent non-medical prescribing (V300) if permitted within professional group
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical based Master’s degree
  • Study/knowledge relevant to speciality.
  • Post graduate management / leadership qualification or willingness to undertake
  • Study/knowledge relevant to speciality.
  • Counselling qualification
  • Research qualification
  • Have successfully completed a previous NMC Approved Teaching and Assessing or equivalent

Advanced clinical skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of developing advanced skills in history taking and physical examination skills within speciality area
  • Highly developed communication skills
  • Ability to assess, diagnose and action under pressurised environments
  • Demonstrates expertise in complex decision making
  • Autonomous management of own patient load (ward based or clinic environment)
  • Autonomously assess, diagnose and develop management plans for urgently referred patients
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of extensive application of learning in practice
  • Ability to assess, diagnose and action under pressurised environments

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Highly developed specialist experience across a wide range of emergency care procedures that is underpinned by theory and continued knowledge and skills through CPD
  • Experience of prescribing practice in the last 12 months
  • Evidence of involvement in policy and protocol development and implementation and ability to influence service changes
  • Significant experience in specialist or practitioner post at Band 7 with knowledge and skills that can be accredited or mapped against the essential criteria of this role
  • Experience managing own caseload of patients and autonomous practice
  • Experience of teaching, assessing and mentoring of learners
  • Experience in audit, research and development
  • Proven line manager experience able to manage a team of healthcare professionals
