Job overview

To ensure that the Trust complies with all applicable waste legislation and project manage the Trust Behavioural change programme supporting the Head of Sustainability in achieving our corporate objectives in connection with Green Plan / waste minimisation/reduction and recycling.

Main duties of the job

1. Ensure the Trust and its waste subcontractors comply with  legislation

2. To drive reductions in total waste and  increases in  waste recycled.

3. To be conversant with the waste management contracts.

4. Support the procurement and  validation of SOW (Scope of Works) and tender specifications.

5.  Monitoring of the waste management contracts. 

6. Make decisions  /resolve problems arising from waste contractors.

7.  To budgets, prepare  estimates and purchase  goods and services within  the Trusts guidelines.

8. Check, validate and process central waste management invoices. 

9. Ensure the contractors comply with health and safety, DOC and all  relevant legislation.

10. Develop strategies for the Trusts waste management services.

11.  Understanding of new and current waste management legislation. 

12. Produce progress reports for waste management. Analyse and report on data for the Trust SMT.

13. Coordinate and monitor waste management costs

14. Raise awareness for waste management and recycling  across the Trust through, goal setting, mentoring and education.

15. Assist with internal environmental audits and external audits of contractors.

16. Deal with queries and to be the initial point of contact for special / hazardous waste issues.

17. Promote to all Trust staff the  services and procedures to enable them to reduce, reuse, recycle and dispose of their general waste streams.

18. Trade Discharges are managed and negotiated by the Safety Health and Environment Unit.

Service Delivery 

·         Develop and Deliver an exemplar waste management service

·         Manage and implement the segregation requirements of the newly introduced behavioural change programme.

·         Ensure compliance with all duty of care, legislation

·         Produce cost saving innovation ideas and implement with a business case approach to identifying / deliver savings

·         Waste Stream Audits

·         Introduce Efficient Collection Regimes

·         Ensure we receive the right treatment for the relevant waste types produced

Essential criteria

Essential criteria
  • Must be able to demonstrate behaviours consistent with the Trust’s Values and Behaviours
  • Appropriate experience in a corporate setting sufficient to demonstrate competency and ability Educated to degree level in environmental management or equivalent / associated discipline related to the role
  • Good knowledge of the legal and practical aspects of waste management within an organisation Comprehensive understanding of waste hierarchy, mechanisms for reducing waste arising and how to monitor / measure arising against targets
  • Computer literate – including experience of email and spreadsheet packages Ability to promote waste minimisation through face-to-face engagement and presentations Ability to liaise confidently with staff at a variety of levels across the hospitals Demonstrate the skill set to encourage behavioural change in all waste matter from the board to the shop floor. Work independently and make on the spot decisions which are all within our Trust Values ensuring we are compliant in all waste matters Take responsibility and lead in delivery the Trust Waste Policy
