We have an exciting position for an enthusiastic person who is passionate about providing physiotherapy for women as part of the Perinatal Pelvic Health Service. This role will combine clinical care with administrative support as part of the Multi-Disciplinary Team for this new and exciting service. 

You will be part of the team providing expert and timely care to women through their antenatal and postnatal period. There will be close working with other members of the MDT to be able to complete this along with strong support from within the Physiotherapy  profession.

Development of skills and knowledge within this post will be of a high priority. The successful candidate would be expected to undertake training and working with specialist staff to make maximum use of the opportunities on offer.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Physiotherapy provides key therapeutic assessments and interventions to patients in order to promote independence and facilitate optimum function for individuals working with patients, families and carers and the multi-disciplinary team to achieve agreed outcomes for patients.
  • The Technical Instructor will contribute to the provision of Physiotherapy within a specified clinical area. This includes identified clinical, administrative and educational roles.
  • To carry a clinical caseload, the majority of which is non-routine, which has been delegated to them by the relevant team member who has delegation responsibilities for this task or a predetermined caseload within their scope of practice.
  • To work to Therapy and UHL Service priorities.
  • To work with patients, carers and their families in a sensitive and professional manner.
  • To liaise with other professionals for the benefit of the patient.
  • To work with and support those who have complex needs including physical, psychological and communication difficulties.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication

 

  • To work with those who have communication/language difficulties and complex needs to overcome, in a sensitive and professional manner.

 

  • Develop, maintain and promote effective professional working relationships with other disciplines and members of the Therapy Team.

 

  • To liaise with other disciplines concerned with the care and treatment of patients.

 

  • To participate in and actively contribute to departmental meetings including staff meetings.

 

  • To maintain high standards of verbal and written communication using a wide range of skills to receive, interpret and convey complex ideas in well-structured and coherent form using a range of means in both familiar and new situations.

 

  • To maintain a professional level of record keeping in accordance with UHL Documentation Policies and professional guidelines.

 

 Responsibilities – Patient/Client Care

 

  • Be independently responsible for managing a clinical caseload, the majority of which is non-routine. To formulate and deliver an individualised therapy care plan from referral to discharge/transfer of care within defined protocols, in order to facilitate a timely and safe discharge from hospital/ Physiotherapy.

 

  • To obtain information from individuals about their health status and needs.

 

  • To enable individuals to make health choices and decisions.

 

  • To document interventions in a timely and accurate manner.

 

  • To liaise with and involve the patient's carers with the patient’s treatment.

 

  • Evaluate and process referrals, using an acquired level of clinical reasoning skills, from the designated ward (s/service) in order to ensure the patient receives the appropriate Physiotherapy intervention based on clinical and therapeutic pathways.

 

  • Set outcome related goals with the patient, in order to meet the needs of the patient.

 

  • Plan, deliver, evaluate, and progress Physiotherapy interventions using clinical decision making skills in order to work towards and achieve identified Therapy/patient goals.

 

  • Develop and apply knowledge of Physiotherapy processes, techniques and tools, in order to deliver appropriate treatment interventions and facilitate appropriate clinical decisions.

 

  • To use specialist techniques for the handling of patients with physical deficits often within confined spaces.

 

  • To lead the Physiotherapy element of Home Assessments if clinically indicated with another member of the Multi-disciplinary team present.

 

  • To undertake access visits if clinically indicated to assess patient’s home circumstances as required.
  • To liaise with Social Services, Community Therapy Services and other community agencies with regard to provision of equipment, treatment and/or support for patients on discharge and refer to external agencies as appropriate.

 

  • To provide written reports of assessments/treatment/interventions for inclusion in medical notes internal/external to UHL as appropriate.

 

  • Assess patient’s requirements for clinical/therapeutic devices ensuring appropriate training/education is provided for patients/carers.

 

  • To use acquired knowledge and skills to problem solve within their own clinical area of work and within their wider Physiotherapy team.

 

Responsibilities – Service

 

  • Ensure clinical and non-clinical working practices are consistent with Therapy Service and UHL standards, in order to monitor and maintain the quality of care delivered to the patients.

 

  • To contribute to changes to local working practices/procedures and implement within own scope of practice.

 

  • Undertake and deliver appropriate training and development to maintain a high quality of service including team development/in-service training.

 

  • To recognise own limitations and awareness of when to seek guidance from registered staff.

 

  • To act as a resource within your scope of practice when working alongside other members of the Therapy team, during the implementation of routine work.

 

  • To support the Therapy Service in promoting the role and value of Physiotherapy to other healthcare professionals and the public.

 

  • Deliver education and training relating to specific Physiotherapy interventions to Therapy Support Staff, patients and carers within your scope of practice.

 

  • To undertake supervisory and delegation responsibility for the work of others within a defined and supervised structure within your scope of practice.

 

  • To participate in relevant multi-disciplinary team meetings in order to represent Physiotherapy intervention and make recommendations as appropriate in the best interest of patients.

 

  • To participate in the induction of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Staff

 

  • To undertake an annual appraisal and actively participate in the setting and achieving of objectives.

 

  • To actively participate in monthly formal one: one meetings.

 

  • To ensure that duties undertaken are within scope of practice and within the limits of competence and authority.

 

  • To liaise with colleagues and work across site and speciality if appropriate in order to ensure the provision of a seamless equitable service.

 

  • To participate in the collection, recording and inputting of statistical information e.g. TIARA.

 

  • To be involved in clinical audit and related clinical governance activity within the service.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of formal assessment of competencies in current role e.g. UHL Band 2, 3 or 4 competencies
  • GCSE English (Grade C or above) and Maths (Grade C or above) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Other relevant health or social care based qualification e.g. National Care Certificate
  • Evidence of learning at Diploma level or equivalent
