Job overview

The new appointee will work alongside the clinical lead optometrists to ensure a comprehensive and co-ordinated medical contact lens and low vision service. The appointee will be appraised in their clinical role and advice and support for career progression will be available from the Clinical lead for Optometry and Cornea.

The successful appointee will be responsible for ensuring that the department’s consistently high standards of patient care are maintained by taking a patient focused approach in all planned activities.

Main duties of the job

Work in accordance to the SOP and clinical protocols.

Work in the medical contact lens service within their approved level of competence.

Work in the low vision service with their approved level of competence.

  • Maintain standards and practice in accordance with the GOC/ABDO Code of Professional Conduct, national guidelines and local Trust policies/guidelines.
  • Be responsible for providing and updating relevant patient information.
  • Be conversant with Trust Policies and guidelines and ensure compliance.
  • Be able to work flexibly in order to meet the demands on the service. This may involve changes to the timetable with reasonable notice provided.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The post holder will provide expert clinical care for patients requiring medical contact lenses.
  • The post holder will train to provide low vision clinics in the community setting.
  • The post holder will assist in development of optometrists, nursing & other allied health staff.
  • This post will join a large team consisting of Optometry Unit in ophthalmology department consisting of 28 consultants and several medical staff and allied health professionals.
  • The post holder will work closely within the optometry unit with the Cornea and Optometry lead and senior optometrists who work in contact lens and low vision department.

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GOC registered Dispensing Optician qualification
  • Contact lens Certificate
Desirable criteria
  • Low vision certificate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 4 years of contact lens experience
Desirable criteria
  • 1 year of advanced contact lens experience
  • 1 year of Low vision experience

Communication and relationship skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills in written, verbal and electronic modes
  • Able to Imparting sensitive or Interview, Application distressing information, communicate across a wide spectrum including patients, relatives, staff at all levels and outside agencies

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of different contact lens types and materials to fir different conditions
  • Knowledge of contact lens complications and management
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of specialist hospital lenses
  • Knowledge of different optical and non-optical low vision aids and their use in patients with vision problems
  • Knowledge of local services for visually impaired

Planning and organisation skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to plan and organise a broad range of complex activities
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to provide education, teaching and training to junior members of staff
