Subspecialty registrar in Maternal Fetal Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Local Appointment MT05

We are actively promoting flexible working options, helping you to manage a work / life balance

Trosolwg o'r swydd

The Subspecialty training programme in University Hospitals of Leicester is modular and includes a number of fixed weekly sessions over a two year period leading to a Subspecialist Accreditation in Maternal Fetal Medicine (subject to satisfactory progress).  The programme is monitored by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.  An additional year is included for those who have not undertaken research.  This is structured so that trainees develop a research project during their first 6 months and then take 12 months (dedicated to research) to complete the project.

Contracted hours will be devoted solely to the training programme but the trainees will be on call for Obstetrics and Gynaecology on a 1:18 rota which may vary from time to time.  Apart from supervising the running of the delivery suite and emergency gynaecology when on call, the trainee will be involved in teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates.

The individual requirements set out in the syllabus for subspecialty training issued by the RCOG will be covered by reading, teaching and clinical experience

The appointee will work closely with the core Fetal Maternal Medicine team but will also have on call responsibilities with the wider Obstetrics & Gynaecology team. We anticipate the appointee will help to deliver our teaching programme and promote theoretical and practical learning and high levels of patient care among more junior colleagues.

Gweithio i'n sefydliad

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

The trainees will be given some administrative experience and responsibility which will allow the development of skills relevant to the future provision and organisation of clinical services.

Trainees will be expected to keep a logbook of their skills development and clinical experience obtained.  This logbook will be inspected at frequent intervals.

The post holder must be registered with the GMC and hold a licence to practice.

Possibility for job share may be considered based on individual circumstances and subject to RCOG approval.

The RCOG requirements for research exemption will be followed. Candidates who are appointed with an MD or previous research experience, will be encouraged to undertake a research project with supervision from the academic/clinical supervisors.  Candidates with no previous research will need to undertake a 12 month research project (which will be part of the programme) in a chosen topic developed during the first 6 months.  Such candidates are encouraged to work towards an MD.  Because of time limitations to complete a laboratory based project, the trainees would have no other major commitments during this 12 month period.  It is intended that the trainee will learn to establish a research programme from inception, (time will be built into accommodate this) i.e. developing the hypothesis/writing the grant application/seeking Ethics approval and hopefully commencing the study.
