Message from Andrew Furlong, Medical Director and Jon Melbourne, Chief Operating Officer

Clinical Director

Emergency and Specialist Medicine Clinical Management Group (ESM CMG) University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

We are firmly committed to being the best possible provider of healthcare and place to work in the NHS and we have an exciting opportunity to recruit a new Clinical Director to the Emergency and Specialist Medicine Clinical Management Group (ESM CMG).

We are looking for a Clinical Director who can show that they lead in the right way and that can evidence what they deliver. We will work together as a team across UHL to drive improvements in care and to create an environment in which individuals and teams can excel. We want to UHL to have one of the best cultures in the NHS because an inclusive and empowering culture delivers safe care.

Main duties of the job

The post is open to consultants working in an Acute Teaching Hospital who are able to demonstrate experience in Medical Management; a track record of dynamic and innovative leadership; are comfortable working with complexity; and have experience of working across service boundaries.

Candidates will need to be able to commit circa 5-6 PAs of their job plan to the role. For external candidates, the Trust will look to provide suitable clinical work or other management activity to bring the job plan up to 10 PAs should you so wish. This opportunity is open to colleagues who work less than full time (LTFT). We would welcome a discussion about individual circumstances if you are interested in the role.

The post also attracts a non-pensionable management supplement and is to start as soon as possible.

Application will be by CV and a personal statement indicating your leadership style and reasons why you would wish to be considered for this role (personal statement should be no more than two sides). Applications should be sent to [email protected] by midday 16th August 2024.

You should supply details of two referees, one of which must be your current line manager.

If you wish to find out more about the role, please contact either Jon Melbourne, Chief Operating Officer ([email protected]), or Andrew Furlong, Medical Director ([email protected]).

Thank you for taking the time to consider this opportunity.

Working for our organisation

Working For Your Organisation

Our new strategy, 'Leading in healthcare, trusted in communities' was developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners and is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will be a key member of the Trust’s leadership team – with overall responsibility for leading the ESM CMG. We want a leader who will work alongside us to drive improvements across all aspects of UHL. The role will provide many opportunities to make a difference for our staff and patients and will have our full support.

Now is an exciting time to join UHL. We have a once in a generation chance to transform our hospitals through our national capital allocation. The ambitious and wide-ranging transformation programme will ensure the teams can deliver the highest quality services and will significantly improve outcomes and care for patients and the local communities. UHL is also part of the LLR Integrated Care System and we already have strong relationships with primary care, CCG, Leicestershire Partnership Trust, Local Authority and voluntary sector partners.

UHL is a Trust with regional and national reach. It has an operating turnover in excess of £1.5 billion and it provides a wide range of general and specialist services across a diverse range of communities in Leicester, Leicestershire, Rutland and beyond. Whilst we are a large Trust, it is essential that we ensure all of our communities, patients and colleagues receive a personal and positive experience when they interact with the Trust.

ESM CMG covers over 3,000 colleagues, £232m turnover and services including emergency medicine, geriatric medicine, neurosciences, dermatology, diabetes, endocrinology, general medicine, infectious diseases, stroke and rheumatology.
