Consultant Radiologist- Body & GIGU Cross Sectional Imaging

This is a replacement post in the Imaging and Medical Physics Service, Clinical Support & Imaging Services Clinical Management Group (CSI CMG). The post holder will join an established cohesive team of radiologists supporting clinicians and delivering acute and elective imaging in both specialist areas and in general radiology.

The post was developed after successful business case for expansion of CTC pathway for 2 WW Colon Cancer patients.

It is expected that the post holder will take part in the provision of specialised emergency imaging across UHL.

The appointment will be whole time. Any consultant who is unable for personal reasons, to work whole time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues.

  • To undertake programmed activities GIGU imaging and support to Oncology Services. Opportunities for development of the existing service will be supported where they reflect the needs of the local population and the development plans of the trust
  • To support the provision of CT colon as independent pathway via for 2 WW Cancer Colon
  • To support emergency imaging across UHL
  • To review Inpatient imaging performed as an emergency within and out of hours
  • To lead/take part in many multi-disciplinary team
  • To contribute to the training of the Specialist Registrars on the East Midland Deanery (South) radiology training scheme.
  • To supervise and train skill-mix radiographers, sonographers and non-medical staff in their present and anticipated
  • To support and participate in audit, research, teaching and
  • To take part in the diagnostic on-call rota within UHL and assist in the provision of weekend radiological support for the Imaging and Medical Physics CBU.

The Imaging service at UHL represents one of the largest single radiology services in the UK, providing imaging services to UHL, one of the largest teaching hospital Trusts in the United Kingdom. The Imaging service has received recognition for the level and efficiency of   its service delivery, as well as for innovation in healthcare delivery.

The department offers radiologists an opportunity to develop and manage radiology services across the district in a cohesive and integrated manner. Core services are based around the three main departments offering a comprehensive range of imaging support to the Trust and the surrounding region.

The three acute hospitals in Leicester, the Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI), the Leicester General Hospital (LGH) and the Glenfield Hospital (GH) merged into the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust on 1st April 2000. This Trust provides secondary and tertiary care services to the Strategic Health Authority, currently the biggest health authority in England.

UHL is one of the biggest hospital Trusts in the United Kingdom, and recognised by the Healthcare Commission as one of the highest performing acute care Trusts in England and Wales.

The post holder will be expected to work closely in a team of the existing radiologists and to support the continuing development of imaging within UHL as a whole.

The GIGU team is 10.8 WTE consultants. Offering cross sectional skills in GIGU and Oncology.

UHL is tertiary referral centre for GIGU cancers and supratertiary referral centre for HBP and Urology.

The on call is category A low frequency (approximately 1 in 22 on call out of hours)

Depending on the applicants skillset there is the opportunity to include 1 or 2 PA of GIGU intervention within the role. The post holder will join either the existing diagnostic on call rota, approximately 1 in 9 delivering acute imaging to UHL or the non-vascular/GI-GU Intervention on-call rota, 1 in 8.

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date
  • FRCR or equivalent

  • Higher degree eg MSc, MD or equivalent

Experience

  • Fully trained in general radiology with specialist training in GIGU
  • Trained in acute cover in ED department
  • Clinical Knowledge and Expertise: Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence based practice
  • IT Skills commensurate with senior medical staff
  • Willingness to develop skills and experience in areas of interest
