Main duties of the job
This is an initial 12 month locum post in Acute Medicine created in order to help develop further expansion in provision of Acute Medical Care within the trust. The successful candidate will join the existing Acute Medicine consultant team in helping to deliver Acute Medicine Services. Their main responsibilities will be across the Emergency Floor from the Emergency Department and Same Day Emergency Care unit to several Admission Units.
The Acute Medical Department currently covers several areas including a 136 bedded Acute Medical Unit which incorporates a higher level receiving area referred to as the Acute Care Bay and Acute Frailty Unit; along with a separate Same Day Emergency Care area.
The Acute Medicine Department aims to sustain its position at the forefront of advances in Acute Medicine. It is developing ambulatory care & triage services to prevent admissions and to offer new options to GPs seeking advice for acutely unwell patients. It is also developing a new in-reach service to the Emergency Department to facilitate rapid assessment and appropriate management of Medical Patients presenting via the Emergency Department.
Working for our organisation
The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at the Leicester Royal Infirmary comprises a dedicated 136 bedded Unit. The consultant team is well supported 24/7 by AMU-based junior medical staff (FY1, FY2, CT1-2 and ACCS), a team of approximately 9 Acute Medicine SpRs, as well as a comprehensive multidisciplinary team.
Six consultants (including one Geriatrician) staff the unit on a daily basis, currently working in blocks of up to 5-days in a week (Monday to Friday).
During this time they are based on AMU throughout the working day and on-call from home at night. Regular AMU meetings take place to discuss clinical cases, audit, governance and changes to the service.
Acute medical in-reach is provided into one of the largest emergency departments in the country. Built in 2017, the department is in a state-of-the-art building with top of the range facilities and technology.
