Highly Specialised Cardiac Physiologist - Adult Echo

NHS AfC: Band 7

We are actively promoting flexible working options, helping you to manage a work / life balance

Job overview

We have a fantastic opportunity to join our growing and developing Echocardiography Department as a Band 7 Highly Specialised Physiologist.

University Hospitals of Leicester is made up of three hospitals located around the county. Glenfield Hospital is a tertiary Cardiology referral centre providing specialised Cardiology services to Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Smaller satellite Cardiac Investigations departments are located at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital.

As a tertiary cardiac centre, we provide echocardiography support to a wide range of specialties including cardiothoracic surgery, interventional cardiology, TAVI, electrophysiology procedures, inherited cardiac conditions, heart failure, cardio-oncology and cardiac rhythm management. Additionally, we provide an Echo service to 3 intensive care units and a large CCU.

Currently we offer physiologist led services in bubble and contrast studies and we are developing physiologist led services in stress echo (exercise and pharmacological), TOE and valve clinics. We have recently achieved BSE departmental accreditation in transthoracic, transesophageal  and stress echo as well as training.

All applicants will be expected to have BSc Clinical Physiology or equivalent. HCPC registration or RCCP registration (or eligibility to join) is essential. Full BSE accreditation (or European equivalent) is also an essential criterion.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 7 Highly Specialised Cardiac Physiologist, you will be provided with opportunities to enhance your skills as a clinical practitioner by working within the echo department at all three UHL hospital sites. More specialised training will be provided in strain imaging, 3D, contrast & bubble studies, stress Echo and TOE where necessary. We also operate an out of hours emergency echo on call service.

The cardiac physiology service at UHL performs over 20,000 cardiac investigations and procedures per year including, 15,000 echocardiograms. You will be joining a team comprised of cardiac physiologists, administration and support staff who work together to support a team of highly skilled, world class cardiology consultants.

Our department has a range of high specification echocardiography machines and analytical software. All of which have strain and 3D capability. We have a multi-vendor fleet of echo machines ranging from GE, Phillips and Siemens.

Working for our organisation

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence
And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team
This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
