An exciting new vacancy has arisen for a Medical Engineering Technician within Medical Electronics Department.

The Medical Electronics Department will be responsible for managing the maintenance and repair of all medical equipment across WWL’s services. As this is a brand-new service, the successful applicant will be expected to work with minimum supervision, and demonstrate a very proactive, enthusiastic approach to their work to introduce best practise solutions from the outset.

The applicant should possess an HNC in electrical / electronic engineering and have experience of working in the field of electrical / electronic maintenance, preferably in a healthcare environment.

Experience of working with engineering databases would be a distinct advantage.

The role will require the post holder to travel across the Wigan & Leigh area in a works vehicle as part of their normal daily duties. A full, current UK driving license will be required.

This is a permanent post working 37.5 hours per week. A flexible approach will be required, with the occasional requirement to work outside of normal clinic hours.

Responsibilities will include acceptance testing of new equipment, minor repairs and planned preventative maintenance. A knowledge of cleaning / decontamination procedures would be an advantage.

This position will also assist WWL sleep services by doing acceptance testing and troubleshooting on respiratory equipment.

The role will offer training & the opportunity to progress throughout the Trusts engineering services.

You will be self-motivated and well-organised, capable of planning and executing the maintenance of equipment used in various levels of clinical areas. This requires good communication and negotiation skills as you will be required to organise access arrangements with equipment users and external suppliers in conjunction with other divisions.

You will also be expected to ensure efficient use of financial resources within the department and any other tasks required for effective operation of the department.

Main duties include:

  • Collect and deliver medical equipment prior to and post decontamination, storage and servicing across the WWL sites.
  • Conduct acceptance testing for new devices, including sleep service equipment, in accordance with medical electronics acceptance protocols.
  • Using the department’s vehicle when appropriate. This will involve communicating technical related information to technical / non-technical staff and your own colleagues.
  • Disassemble and reassemble medical equipment for decontamination and repair as required using your skills of dexterity and co-ordination with the aid of precision tools and specialised test equipment.
  • Clean and decontaminate medical equipment prior to service, repair and storage in accordance with department procedures to ensure that equipment is safe for oneself and other engineering technicians to carry out their duties and to prevent cross infection to patients.
  • Service and repair a range of medical equipment within the Trust diagnosing faults on complex equipment using test equipment and dedicated computer software provided.
  • Carry out electrical safety testing on serviced and repaired complex medical equipment that is to be used for patient care with the test equipment provided to ensure that the results obtained are within the stated limits and values
  • Maintain the statutory and general records appertaining to the work of the Medical Electronics Department that will include equipment history, maintenance, test results, technical updates, mandatory upgrades and modifications, and stock control.
  • Use Oracle as required and liaise with contractors and external companies in dealing with ordering / invoicing etc.

  • HNC/HND in electronic / electrical repair and maintenance and attend manufacturers short courses. Or equivalent relevant experience in an electronic / electrical environment.

  • ECDL European Computer Driving Licence.

Experience

  • Experience in the maintenance and performance checking of electrical/electronic equipment.
  • Practical experience of using a range of test & measuring equipment and of applying electronics engineering workshop practice and techniques.

  • Previous employment in a health care maintenance environment.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and techniques used within a maintenance environment.

  • Ability to work with other professions. Must be able to work using own initiative as work will be managed rather than supervised.

  • Primarily to be involved with the repair and servicing of High Risk devices i.e. Defibs Infusion devices i.e. syringe and I.V pumps, PCA's etc, Non-Invasive Ventilators, CPaps, Medical Gas system (Flowmeters and suction controllers (VAC) etc
  • Full driving licence.
  • Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation
