We are currently recruiting to a fully funded fellowship in advanced HPB endoscopy. This post is designed to provide specialist advanced ERCP training and to support the activities of the endoscopy and gastroenterology department, within the Division of Medicine at WWL. This will be predominantly based at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary with some endoscopy activity at Leigh Infirmary. Wrightington Wigan and Leigh is a high performing trust and principle teaching Hospital for Edge Hill University.  HPB endoscopy is provided by 3 consultants with access to 6 lists per week of combined ERCP and EUS.  The trust has close links with regional HPB surgical centre in Manchester Royal Infirmary. It offers the opportunity to pursue advanced training in pancreaticobiliary endoscopy and PB medicine. We perform over 350 ERCPs and 300 EUS procedures a year. Trainees would attend on average 4 ERCP/EUS lists a week.

Clinical activity will be under the supervision of Dr Keld (Clinical Director) and Dr Lee /Dr Shalaby (endoscopy), ERCP and EUS provision is at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. This post will be suitable for candidates with full JAG certification in gastroscopy and at least provisional certification in colonoscopy (and polypectomy) with audit data supporting that the candidate’s performance meets standard JAG Key Performance Indicators. Outpatient clinics are at Thomas Linacre centre and Leigh Infirmary.

The post holder is expected to:

·         Have and maintain full registration with the General Medical Council. Medical Staff are advised to continue membership of one of the medical defense organisations

·         Share in the cohesive, professional and patient centred approach of the existing department

·         Maintain continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.

·         Integrate within, motivate and provide professional lead in MDT team

·         Liaise, communicate and co-operate with the Lead Clinicians, Managers and relevant colleagues The post holder is expected to have the following skills and attributes:

·         A wide experience in both outpatient and inpatient general gastroenterology and general medicine

·         Experience and interest in teaching

·         Evidence of engaging with clinical governance including audit

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Administration 

 The duties of the appointee also include administrative and duties appropriate to the post.

 Audit

 

All fellows are responsible for maintaining their own clinical audit data and for working with the Directorate Information Team to ensure that directorate audit information is recorded correctly.

 Clinical Governance & Management

 The appointee will be required to participate in all clinical governance activities related to the relevant departments. The post holder is expected to participate in the clinical effectiveness activities and to encourage and foster improvements in the quality and standards of clinical services. The post holder will assist with the safeguarding of high standards of care by participating in the creation of an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish to the benefit of patients and the employing Trust’s clinical reputation.

Accountability

 The appointee will be clinically accountable to the Clinical Lead and managerially accountable to the Trust and the Chief Executive, through the Service Clinical Director.

 Continuing Professional Development and Continuing Medical Education

 

The post holder is expected to take responsibility for their own continuing professional development and to take part in continuing medical education activities, in line with the requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and in consultation with their Clinical Lead.

Annual Leave & Study Leave

To ensure the efficient running of the service, the post holder must make sure that, in conjunction with colleagues, adequate arrangements are made to cover planned absences or annual leave. 

 Annual leave and study leave must be booked a minimum of 6 weeks in advance.

Salary and Conditions of Service

 Salary will be according to the current national agreed salary for your scale and will be detailed in your contract of employment.

There is provision for appropriate time off in lieu for working on bank holidays. 

 Responsibility for Teaching

The Trust is committed to sustaining and advancing the provision of medical, nursing and other professional education, and to the delivery of high-quality postgraduate and undergraduate training. 

The post holder will promote life-long learning through the use of appropriate coaching, teaching and assessment in practice by:

·         Awareness of patient information systems e.g. EPR, PAS.

  • Ensure all relevant documentation is completed in an accurate and timely manner

 

Work Circumstances & on-call 

 There will be the expectation of contributing to the consultant on-call service currently 1 in 9 with funding to expand to 1 in 14.  The on-call will be support from the consultant team and a Gastroenterology ANP. The on-call will fine tune skills in emergency endoscopy involving a split week of daily inpatient endoscopy, out of hours emergency endoscopy and providing a Gastroenterology in-reach service. This will be based at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

 Responsibility for Health & Safety

 Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. 

 Standard Duties & Responsibilities

 The Trust operates a No Smoking Policy.

 All Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust staff employed within Clinical Environments and have contact with children, vulnerable adults; service users and their families must familiarise themselves, be aware of their responsibilities and adhere to Local Safeguarding Children’s Board, Local Safeguarding Adult Board and WWL Procedures for Safeguarding and Protecting Children which are available on the Trust Policy Library.

 In accordance with Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016, employees who are required to interact regularly with the public, both face to face, and by telephone, are required to be able to speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.

 

The post holder must at all times carry out responsibilities and duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities policy.

 

Compliance with the General Data Protection Regulations 2016, Data Protection Act  2018 and Information Governance Principles – the postholder is not entitled to use for their own benefit or gain, or to divulge to any persons, firm or other organisation whatsoever, any confidential information belonging to the Trust or relating to the Trust’s affairs or dealings which may come to their knowledge during employment.

 Compliance with the Health & Social Care Act 2008 – Code of Practice on the Prevention and Control of Infections and related guidance – the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the reduction and management of healthcare related infection in all of their actions. This entails compliance with Trust Infection Prevention and Control policy and related Standard Operating Procedure (SOP’s); along with risk assessment of all situations; as staff have a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Staff must be fully compliant with Trust Infection prevention and Control eLearning policy.

 All applicants to any post within the Trust are required to declare any involvement either directly or indirectly with any firm, company, relevant person or organisation which has any interest with the Trust, the services provided by the Trust or any element of patient care. Failure to do so may result in an employment application being rejected, or if it is discovered after appointment the omission of such information could lead to dismissal. This includes any form of private practice relating to medical care.

 Compliance with Trust Policies and Procedures including the Code of Conduct.

 Compliance with Standing Financial Instructions (SFIs) – The SFI’s identify the financial responsibilities which apply to everyone working for the Foundation Trust and its constituent organisations including trading units.  Failure to comply with Standing Financial Instructions can in certain circumstances be regarded as a disciplinary matter that could result in dismissal. Compliance with the SFIs is monitored by the Finance Department and post holders are therefore required to understand their responsibilities outlined within this document and ensure compliance with its instructions.

 Responsibility for all records (including patient health, financial, personal and administrative) that they gather or use as part of their work within the trust. The records may be paper, electronic, microfiche, audio or videotapes, x-ray images.

 Any other duties appropriate to the grade. The range of duties and responsibilities outlined above are indicative only and are intended to give a broad flavour of the range and type of duties that will be allocated. They are subject to modification in the light of changing service demands and the development requirements of the postholder.
