Joining our fantastic team at Royal Preston Hospital, this is a 15-month training contract where you will learn everything about being a Pharmacy Assistant. This is your chance to train, learn, and grow in a fast-paced, hands-on role, all while being part of an amazing team.

You’ll be at the heart of things so will really get to learn on the go – working closely with our pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, and many more. From dispensing medicines to managing stock, assembling orders, and ensuring the safe storage of meds, your work will be essential in keeping things running smoothly and ultimately help our patients.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you'll play a key part in ensuring smooth communication between pharmacy, nursing, medical teams, patients, and external organisations. You'll help provide an effective medicine supply service, managing stock and dispensing medicines while ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Your work will also contribute to reducing medicine wastage and maintaining secure storage of medicines. Working as part of a team, you’ll be a role model and help develop strong relationships within and outside the department.

You’ll focus on ongoing personal development, support team training, and ensure quality service by following safety, legal, and ethical guidelines. Additionally, you'll be involved in service improvement and supporting financial goals for the department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will follow a comprehensive 15-month training programme that will cover all aspects of hospital pharmacy. 

You will be required to achieve the BTEC Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Support Staff.  You will receive full support from an assessor and their line manager with allocated study during working hours.
To be eligible to enrol as a pharmacy apprentice candidates must: 
1. be aged over 16 
2. be living in England and have proof of 3 years UK residency (if applicable)
3. not be taking part in full-time education
 
*Please be aware* If you have a Level 4 or above qualification, you are not eligible for apprenticeship funding.

Duties to include but not be limited to:

  • Communicates all relevant information and advice to the pharmacy, nursing and medical teams; patients and service users; and with external organisations as required.
  • Provide an effective medicine supply service (stock and dispensed medicines) to wards/departments and patients of the Trust and external customers by receiving necessary training
  • Contribute to effective stock management within the pharmacy
    department ensuring compliance with MHRA requirements and Good Distribution Practice
  • Ensures ward and department compliance with Safe and Secure storage of medicines standards
  • Participates in activities to support minimising medicines wastage
  • Acts as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the
    organisation.
