Are you an enthusiastic and motivated paediatric nurse who is passionate about delivering high quality care to the children of Preston and surrounding area. We are looking for an experienced Paediatric Nurse looking to enhance your skills to join our Paediatric Assessment Unit Team. We can offer an induction package with a ward based educator.

Main duties of the job

The unit is a fast paced changing environment with referrals from primary care, emergency department, urgent care, midwifes and health visitors and also families who have open access to the unit to self-refer. Each day is always different which makes the area an ideal opportunity to learn and develop new skills

We have created a  cohort of nursing staff to deliver high quality care to children and their families who come through the Paediatric Assessment Unit. No previous experience of working in an assessment unit is required as full training will be given, including training on Manchester Triage system.

We are a small but expanding team but are proud of the service we deliver. We work collectively as a team to constantly evaluate and improve our service where possible. We value everybody’s input and see all staff as having a vital role in the delivery of high class, safe and effective care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

👩‍⚕️ Access, plan, implement, and evaluate care to meet patient’s needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidence-based guidelines.

📚 Support and provide patient education and health promotion.

🩺 Be responsible for the delivery and coordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation, and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff.

⚠️ Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety, and security legislation, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

🔍 Assist in setting, monitoring, and maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.

🗣️ Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.

📝 Maintain accurate and complete records of all care activities, in a timely manner, adhering to local and professional standards for documentation.

🌟 Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team, and the organisation.

🤝 Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting, and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.

🏥 Ensure the environment of care is safe, well-equipped, and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate NMC Registration
  • RN1, RN2 General nursing posts or RN8 or RNC Children’s nursing posts
  • NMC recognised mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
  • Diploma in nursing
  • Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses
Desirable criteria
  • Degree

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Willing to expand clinical role eg IV additives, venepuncture and cannulation
  • Awareness of changes within Nursing practice
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and the relevance to practice
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates competency during internship
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of ethical issues
  • Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality such as day case surgery, allergy, medical investigations.
  • Knowledge of leadership and management
