Are you a driven individual, already working within Advanced Practice, with a passion to work within a Specialist Centre for Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery? An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Advanced Specialist Practitioner to join our tertiary MDT Orthopaedic Spinal Surgical service in a part-time secondment position. Within this innovative, ‘Our People’s Award’s’ Team of the year.

You will be a key member of the multi-disciplinary Orthopaedic Spinal Team, supported by 5 Consultant surgeons and our current Advanced specialist practitioners.

You will participate in the ‘Quality Award’ winning ‘OSRAS’ (Orthopaedic Spinal Rapid Access Service) supporting SOW (Surgeon of the week) in delivering the spinal on-call service that runs from 07:30-17:30 Monday – Friday.  The role involves triage, attending handover meetings, providing complex spinal assessments for consideration of surgical intervention with consultant surgeon oversight.  Patients are referred into this Tier 2 Regional Spinal Service from across the region.

Main duties of the job

You will join a team who are passionate about the delivery of high quality, patient focussed, evidence-based care within this specialist spinal surgical service.  You must be a good team player, with excellent communication skills, you will actively participate in the complex MDT case discussions alongside Consultant Spinal Surgeons, Consultant Radiologists and the wider MDT.

The Team are proud of their previous and ongoing Research and Audit activities, and you will contribute to clinical governance by actively engaging in data collection via British Spine Registry, and supporting ongoing research and audit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • To practice autonomously with a high level of accountability at an advanced clinical level in the direct delivery of high-quality care.
  • Proven competency on the referral and interpretation of x-rays (IRMER), MRI scans, blood tests making critical clinical decisions based on advanced clinical skills and assessment.
  • Plan and manage complete episodes of care, working in partnership with others and delegating and referring as appropriate to optimise health outcomes and resource use, as well as providing direct support to patients and clients.
  • Demonstrate highly developed specialist knowledge of spinal pathways with knowledge and experience of surgical criteria and suitability.
  • To provide clear leadership and direction to support both the medical, AHP and nursing teams acting as a role model for the Trust, presenting a positive image to patients and staff.
  • Advocate and contribute to the development of an organisational culture that supports continuous learning and development, evidence-based practice and succession planning.
  • Critically engage in research activity, adhering to good research practice guidance, so that evidence-based strategies are developed and applied to enhance quality, safety, productivity and value for service users.

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Professional clinical qualification.
  • Current Professional Body registration.
  • MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice/Digital Badge in Advanced Practice.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development within the specialist area.
Desirable criteria
  • Independent/Supplementary Non-medical Prescribing (where legally able to).
  • Teaching Qualification (7307/Certificate in Education/equivalent) or willing to undertake.
  • Leadership/Management qualification or willingness to undertake.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Highly motivated and experienced practitioner with at least 5 years experience within a spinal surgical and triage service
  • Proven leadership experience including delivering to targets and service improvement
  • Demonstrates current knowledge of professional and NHS issues and the implication for clinical environment.
  • Enthusiasm and drive to improve practice through education and training
  • Evidence of leading on clinical audit and translation to service development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of the delivery of pre-operative and post-operative care to a tertiary spinal surgical patient cohort
  • Experience in managing chronic health issues
  • Broad & advanced knowledge of clinical pathophysiology
