Hello my name is Jessica Wolstenholme and I am the ward 8 manager. We have exciting opportunities for registered children's nurses of all levels of experience. You would be joining a friendly and dynamic multi-disciplinary team.
We want all our young patients and their families to have a positive experience whilst at our Trust and are looking for some very special staff to join our team. Superpowers include ability to prioritise, resilience, communication, working as part of a team and independently, time management skills, a willingness to develop and also the ability to maintain high professional standards with an element of fun.
Please note: All overseas applications who do not have NMC registration allowing them to practice as a staff nurse in the UK will not be shortlisted.
Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of patients and families, in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework Standards
We have a dedicated outreach team which manages care for children with enuresis, epilepsy, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, complex needs and acute care.
Working with others we have close links with the Emergency Department, Paediatric Assessment Unit, Children’s Outpatients Department and Community Paediatric Service. Our ward based team is multi-disciplinary including physios, pharmacist, play specialists, patient experience coordinator and the CAMHS team.

We can offer a preceptorship package for newly qualified staff, induction training and a ward based educator. The trust also offers a package of health and well -being support to all staff.
The unit includes a 26 bedded inpatient ward, 4 high dependency beds, Paediatric Assessment Unit, Children’s day case unit and specialities include general paediatric medicine and surgery, ENT, max fax, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, neurology and shared care oncology.
We are a forward thinking team and have a number of exciting developments planned, we value the voice of staff as well as patients and there will be opportunities for involvement in shaping the future of the unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- 🩺 Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidence-based guidelines.
- 🤝 Support and provide patient education and health promotion.
- 🏥 Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff.
- ⚠️ Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
- 🔧 Assist in setting, monitoring and maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.
- 🗣️ Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.
- 📝 Maintain accurate and complete records of all care activities, in a timely manner, adhering to local and professional standards for documentation.
- 🌟 Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation.
- ⚖️ Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.
- 🛑 Ensures environment of care is safe, well-equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.

Qualifications and Education
Essential criteria
- Appropriate NMC registration
- Diploma in Nursing
- RNC Children’s Nursing Posts
- NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
- Evidence of continnuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses
Desirable criteria
- Degree
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Willing to expand clinical role e.g. IV additives, venepuncture and cannulation
- Awareness of changes within Nursing practice
- Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
- Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures including safeguarding
- 1 Years previous paediatric ward/department
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of ethical issues
- Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality e.g. surgery
- Knowledge of Leadership and Management
- Research and Development
- Children’s emergency department experience
