You will proactively monitor and provide feedback on compliance, ensuring the highest standards are met.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

The  nurse practitioner will  help manage the inpatient case load of the 12 neurosurgical consultants. They form part of the multidisciplinary team The aim of the role is to provide comprehensive care to both the patient and the family. They will be responsible for the day to day running of the caseload of patients, as well as the responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and setting the standards by providing specialist care and advice.

This role is to supplement the current service and the well-established NP role within the neurosurgical department. They will be contributing to the developed of the service as well as ensuring that all episodes of care are aligned with the trust values, nursing and midwifery professional framework as well as a cost effective use of resources. The role will initially be at band 6 level and with completion of training and competencies can move to Band 7. The hours of work will initially be Monday to Friday 8-4 .

The role will include daily ward rounds, consultant ward rounds, review of patients which can include telephone review , liaising  with members of the MDT, administration. As part of the development of the role the trust will offer specialist training alongside training from outside agencies to develop the role and have skills to act independently when providing care.

  • Possesses excellent leadership skills and are able to direct members of wider multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Provides clinical and leadership support for the junior medical teams.
  • Provides clinical and leadership support for the junior medical teams, across the 24 hour period.
  • Maintain high professional standards of care and expertise
  • Provide specialist advice concerning patients with acute conditions for secondary care.
  • Has a higher level of communication skill, using negotiation and influencing skills to communicate effectively.
  • Management of patients to incorporate physiological, psychological and pharmacological considerations, making multifaceted complex clinical decisions regarding patient management and clinical outcomes, including discharging patients from the service when treatment is complete/optimum outcome is achieved
  • Independently adjust treatment plans according to need assessing appropriate management options, and initiate treatment or referral to an appropriate professional where necessary.
  • Request haematological and radiological investigations appropriately, independently interpreting and acting upon the results of these investigations and adjusting the patients management plan accordingly.
  • Request therapeutic procedures/interventions and evaluate the outcome of these interventions.
  • Assess and manage patients with complex problems, making independent referrals to medical teams and other practitioners both within and outside the specific directorate.
  • Provide education and counselling regarding the range of treatment options available to the patient.
  • Provide the patient with comprehensive information regarding clinical procedures, ensuring informed consent.
  • Promote clinical awareness of the need for constant review and development of professional practice.
  • Prescribing appropriately.
