Job overview
The post will enable the post holder to gain experience in clinical neurology in a supportive environment. Significant clinical learning opportunities are available, with weekly clinical and academic meetings, case presentations and frequent clinical teaching. Although this is not a formal training post, the post holder will be allocated an educational supervisor.
The Neurology Department has acute neurology and short-stay beds on Bleasdale ward. There is a complement of ten Consultant Neurologists, usually five neurology registrars and a team of speciality trainee doctors. The speciality trainee doctors rotate through General Medicine. There are regular outpatient clinics at Royal Preston Hospital, Chorley and South Ribble District General Hospital, Burnley General Hospital, Blackpool Victoria Hospital, Royal Blackburn Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
Main duties of the job
The duties of this post may be summarised as:
- To work with the neurology education lead to deliver high quality neurology education to medical students from University of Manchester, based at Royal Preston Hospital.
- Undertake up to three outpatient clinics a week at Royal Preston Hospital and peripheral hospitals, under consultant supervision.
- Management of inpatients in the regional neurology ward based at Royal Preston Hospital.
The post-holder will be expected to participate in the neurology registrar on-call rota.

Qualifications/ Experience and Skills
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice MBBS or equivalent MRCP
- Experience of neurology at CMT level or equivalent. Commitment to working as part of a clinical team. Teaching skills for both medical and paramedical disciplines
- Effective communication skills. Good organisation skills. Works well within a multidisciplinary environment. Evidence of interest in personal development, e.g. through research, audit and/or publications.
- Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC Standards/ Good Medical Practice
Desirable criteria
- Commitment to pursuing a career in neurology.
