Applicants are invited to apply for this Senior Clinical Fellow in Anaesthesia based at Royal Preston Hosptial. This is a 12-month fixed term post.
You will be expected to provide pre-operative assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up. You will be offered experience in the range of subspecialties we cover, a regular commitment to medical education in a variety of areas such as undergraduate medical students and simulation at Lancashire Simulation Centre and the option of a regular commitment to our state-of-the-art clinical research facility. There will be a combination of teaching lists and solo lists with appropriate supervision.
The post holder will be expected to have experience in Anaesthesia and ideally in Intensive Care Medicine and will be expected to work under distant supervision especially during out of hour’s shifts.
The Department of Anaesthesia is committed to continuing its teaching role and considerable importance is attached to the support of the junior medical staff in the Department.
In addition to routine NHS teaching responsibilities, the Directorate has been funded to provide a significant contribution to the training of undergraduate medical students whose numbers have increased up to 300.
It is essential that the applicants be committed to their own continuing medical education and professional development.
Main duties of the job
To promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care, supporting professional activities and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
The post holder will:
- Provide an Anaesthetic service across the Trust.
- Participate in the trainee anaesthetic rota on both hospital sites with additional cover during colleagues’ absence.
- Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
- Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
- Exercise the freedom to assist in development of specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.
- Undertake administrative duties involved with the care of his/her patients.
- Promote high professional standards of clinical care of patients and the health and safety of the theatre environment.
- Maintain continuing education and professional development at least to the requirements of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

Modern Education Centres are based at both Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital sites and offer excellent library and study facilities, including PC/Internet support for staff and students.
As a teaching hospital, we encourage all our staff to participate in teaching and training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We are committed to developing our teaching and academic activities and can facilitate meeting any training needs for these roles.
We support the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal Colleges and are committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
We are able to offer CT3 equivalence for anaesthetists who require this. Specific modules and requirements can be discussed with the college tutors. We are also able to offer a regular commitment to medical education in a variety of areas such as undergraduate medical students and simulation at Lancashire Simulation Centre. Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration and License to Practice
- MBBS or equivalent
- By the date of commencement in post will have completed three years of Specialty Training or fixed term Specialty training in Anaesthesia (Stage 1)
- Or have equivalent experience or competencies
Desirable criteria
- Initial assessment of competency in anaesthesia (IAC)
- Primary FRCA or equivalent (as per RCoA exemption qualification for Final FRCA)
- Certificates for; ATLS/ETC APLS/EPALS ALS/Equivalent Other relevant courses
- Evidence of commitment to medical education including further qualifications
- Trained clinical supervisor
Experience and Skills
Essential criteria
- Anaesthesia experience in the UK
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience in Intensive Care medicine
- Experience of research
- Involvement in audit
Health
Essential criteria
- Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC Standards/ Good Medical Practice
