Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Clinical Fellow (middle grade) to join the General Paediatrics team at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. These posts are initially for a period of 12 months but there may well be an opportunity to extend further. These posts do not involve any cover for the tertiary Neonatal unit within the Trust.
Main duties of the job
Summary of clinical duties:
- Attending to and managing acute Paediatric cases referred to Paediatric Assessment Unit.
- Attending to Paediatric emergencies attending Emergency Department.
- Managing Paediatric cases on the Paediatric wards.
- Supervising junior doctors’ work, reviewing patients they see and giving advice regarding their managements.
- Conducting ward rounds, usually with the consultant, but sometimes on their own, on the Paediatric wards.
- Provide advanced resuscitation to Paediatric cases when required, coordinating their work with Paediatric consultants, anaesthetists, ED doctors and with consultation with NWTS team.
- Second on call duties out of hours for Paediatric emergencies.
- Assisting the consultant in communication with parents.
- Dealing, under the supervision of the consultant, with child protection issues.
- Conducting outpatient clinics alongside the consultant Paediatrician.
- Cover for unexpected short term sickness of a colleague.

Teaching, training and continuous Medical education
The trust is a Teaching trust with a large and increasing number of medical students having their full training within the trust from year three onwards. In addition, there is commitment for teaching and training of junior medical staff within the department.
The Clinical Fellow (middle grade) will contribute to:
- Formal and informal teaching of Medical students.
- The teaching of junior medical staff working in the Department of Child Health on a routine but informal basis and including, when appropriate, attendance at department tutorials and seminars.
- Assistance with the training of others junior medical staff, including clinical techniques appropriate to Child Health.
- Teaching to nurses and other professions allied to medicine.
Opportunities for clinical research exist within the directorate, and the specialty doctors are encouraged to participate in existing and new research. Applications for research grants may also be made to the Trust’s Research and Development Committee for short-term projects not exceeding three years. Participation in research activities is encouraged.
The post holders will be expected to play a full part in the Child Health Department’s audit and clinical governance programmes. Appropriate time will be rostered in the rota for clinical audit purposes and the successful candidate would be expected to take part and complete audit projects within the directorate.

Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration
- MBBS
Desirable criteria
- MRCHPCH
Experience
Essential criteria
- Have completed four year full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) since first obtaining registration.
- Have at least 2 years training in Paediatrics in the UK.
- Has audit experience
- Up to date with APLS certification
Desirable criteria
- 6 month experience at second on call level in Paediatrics.
- NLS certification
Applicant requirements
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
