Job overview

We are looking for 2 high quality individuals to join the Anaesthetic Department in Bolton as Locum Consultants to be involved in providing a high quality clinical service, whilst contributing fully to the activities of the department and Trust.

The General Anaesthetic team provides anaesthetic services for General, Breast and Colorectal Surgery, Upper GI surgery, Orthopaedics and Trauma, ENT, Dental, Ophthalmic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Gynaecology and Maternity Services for the local population. The department also runs an Acute Pain Service, Chronic Pain/Pain Management Clinic. 

As a general anaesthetist, the appointee would take part in the general on-call and supporting maternity services. Applicants should be on the Specialist Register with a CCT (or equivalent) in Anaesthesia, or within 6 months of gaining a CCT.  The individual should have recognised higher training in Anaesthetics.

Visiting our department prior to interview is encouraged, and if unfamiliar with the hospital, contact with the clinical lead or clinical director prior to application would also be welcomed.

Main duties of the job

  1. Provision of range of anaesthetic services within a highly functioning anaesthetic department.
  2. Responsibility for the supervision and education of junior doctors, students and other clinical staff where appropriate.
  3. An expectation that the post holder will work with managers and colleagues towards achieving the goals and service delivery targets of the department and Trust while ensuring the quality of delivery of service.
  4. A requirement to respond positively to appropriate requests for assistance wherever possible in the event of a major incident or other event where anaesthetic or professional expertise is felt to be advantageous.
  5. A requirement to comply with Trust Policies
  6. A job plan for the post (draft attached) will be agreed with the candidate after appointment.
  7. The sessions for operating work will be arranged to suit the departmental needs, including pre/post/operative care, emergencies, administration and teaching. Some flexibility and changes are inevitable when colleagues are away. Candidates will be encouraged to pursue specialist interests where possible.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 Continuing Education and Professional Development

 This is a crucial aspect of the appointment as part of provision of high quality healthcare and responsibility for clinical governance. It is an essential part of the individual’s development portfolio and department service development. Appropriate time and funding will be allocated according to local policy.

 Teaching

 Bolton Hospital has been approved by the University of Manchester for teaching of medical students in their third year and students are currently taken across many specialties including Anaesthetics, Medicine and Surgery. The Consultant Anaesthetists are expected to participate in their training, both in the operating theatre environment and in formal teaching sessions.

 

  1. Regional weekly teaching programmes are set for the anaesthetic trainees who are preparing for various examinations. A teaching intensive care ward round is held daily and a grand round weekly.
  2. Weekly journal clubs are run by the department, led by Dr Hobbs. This is an excellent educational opportunity and quick reference handbook/ anaesthetic emergency scenarios are also discussed.
  3. There are excellent library facilities in the Medical Institute/new Educational Centre on site.

 Administration

 Appropriate administrative duties, associated with care of patients and running of the Department.

 Clinical Audit

 The Anaesthetic Department takes an active part in Clinical Audit. Regular meetings are held and all members of the department are expected to attend and participate.

  • Clinical Research

 Opportunities for clinical research exist. The appointee will be encouraged to develop special interests/research and the specialist trainees are encouraged to participate and present original work.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration
  • On Specialist Register or due to obtain CCT within 6 months of interview date.
Desirable criteria
  • ALS
  • APLS
  • Resus instructor qualifications

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad-based experience in all major anaesthetic specialties including regional anaesthesia, paediatrics and obstetrics. Recent NHS clinical experience
  • Evidence of participation/ learning with CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding role/direct experience of relevant national bodies.

Ability

Essential criteria
  • Safe and effective application of evidence based knowledge.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Adept at communicating sensitively with patients and relatives.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in anaesthetic preoperative assessment clinic.
  • Higher Paediatric Experience.
  • Use of ultrasound for regional blocks.

Governance/Audit

Essential criteria
  • Participation in clinical audit and QI that has improved medical practice.
  • Understanding of clinical governance.
  • Development of clinical guidelines
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of risk management.
  • Experience in quality improvement projects.

research/publication

Essential criteria
  • Understands definition of research and importance of critical appraisal of evidence for clinical application.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication. Publication in peer reviewed journal.
