Job overview

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) invites applications for a Specialty Doctor (ST3 level +) in Haematology based at Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General hospital.

The clinical team currently comprises 5 consultant/specialist grade  haematologists, 2 specialty doctors, a JCF, an ACP, four clinical nurse specialists and a cancer support worker.

The department is warm, friendly, open and supportive and has a professional and friendly working relationship with all teams involved in the care of haematology patients. 

Main duties of the job

The job plan covers all aspects of a Specialty Doctor’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities.  It  provides a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. Job plans are reviewed on an annual basis.

The post is available full time, part time working will be considered.

ELHT has Teaching Hospital status and has an active educational programme. The post holder has an opportunity to participate in the education of medical students/foundation year doctors.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Department provides a clinical and laboratory service, managing a full range of haematological conditions to BCSH level 2a. Salvage therapy and high dose therapy cases are referred to  Royal Victoria Hospital Blackpool and Central Manchester Haematology centres. Clinical haematology in-patient beds are ring fenced, with junior doctor cover provided by the medical team.  The modern Blood Sciences laboratory is accredited to UKAS ISO15189. 

ELHT holds a weekly independent haemato-oncology MDT, with diagnostic services provided by HMDS Leeds and Radiotherapy services provided by Royal Preston Hospital. The MDT is highly rated in the recent cancer peer review.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • If a UK trainee, Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview If applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification

TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in one or more subspecialty areas and ability to take a lead role in that area

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Diagnosis and management of wide range of haematology disorders
  • Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and commitment to these within the Trust
  • Understanding and experience of performing audit during general professional and higher specialist training
  • Awareness of basic research methods
  • Understanding of current NHS management systems including clinical governance and risk management.
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at courses in teaching, appraisal and mentorship
  • Previous research projects/publications
