Job overview
We are thrilled to announce the opportunity to apply for two new Consultant roles in Sexual Health and HIV services to support patients across Bolton, Salford and Wigan. It is an exciting time to join the sexual health and HIV service with the national implementation of ED Opt-out testing for HIV and a focus on moving to a digital patient record. Successful candidates will work alongside other consultants and part of a multi-disciplinary team.
These roles are part of an exciting new collaboration with Locala Sexual Health (a not-for-profit integrated sexual health service provider) in Wigan. Both roles will be employed by Bolton NHS Foundation Trust with NHS employment terms and conditions. A breakdown of each role has been included below:
1 X 10 PAs - Bolton and Salford Sexual Health and HIV consultant (based at Bolton One health centre (Bolton) and Lance Burn Health Centre (Salford)
This post will provide Sexual Health and HIV services for Bolton patients and will also cover Salford HIV clinics.
1 X 10 PAs - Wigan Sexual Health and HIV consultant in collaboration with Locala
This post will provide Sexual Health and HIV services for Wigan patients based at Locala Sexual Health (Wigan)
Applicants may be required to cross-cover and work across all three locations to cover service need.
Main duties of the job
The main duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide support to the existing sexual health team and undertake expert clinical practice in sexual health, family planning and HIV supporting the clinical director of the service.
- Diagnose manage and treat sexually transmitted infections including HIV with reference to local and national guidelines.
- Provide a comprehensive range of reversible contraceptives dependent on commissioning priorities, service needs and the skills and interests of the individual.
- With the Clinical director of the service develop and review clinical pathways and evidence based clinical guidelines in SRH.
- Provide clinical supervision and medical advice for all clinical staff according to the needs of the service.

SHINE Bolton also provide care for people living with HIV who live in the Wigan area. SHINE Salford provides HIV care for people living with HIV in the Salford area.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Locala became the provider of Integrated Sexual Health (ISH) Services in Bradford in July 2015, Kirklees (Huddersfield and Dewsbury) in April 2016, Stockport and Tameside in April 2022 and latterly Wigan and Leigh in April 2024. New contracts have recently commenced in all areas and as such Locala will be the provider for up to 10 years. The services operate from main hubs and in community venues e.g., pop-up clinics. The integrated sexual health service is based in Wigan town centre, currently with a once a week nurse-led service at the Leigh Infirmary site.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Inclusion on GMC Specialist Register for GU Medicine
- Full GMC registration with license to practice
- MBChB or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- Diploma in HIV Medicine (if CCT after 2007) or evidence of extensive HIV experience
- Dip GUM
Desirable criteria
- DFSRH
- Letters of competence (LoC) in sub dermal implants and intrauterine techniques
- LoC Med / PGA Med Ed SRH
- MFSRH
- MD/PhD or equivalent
- To be formally recognised as a Clinical Supervisor and Educational Supervisor as defined by the GMC Trainer Standards
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience in all aspects of: Contraception, Genitourinary medicine, HIV
- Experience in HIV in-patient management
- Working with young and/or vulnerable people
- Experience of managing complex safeguarding cases and assessing risk
Desirable criteria
- Experience in other aspects of sexual health e.g vulval disease, psychosexual counselling, chronic pelvic pain
- Ultrasound SSM

Essential criteria
- Has an understanding of audit and quality improvement methods and the ways in which they can be used to change clinical practice
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of effective clinical audit or quality improvement which has resulted in useful change
- Research/publication especially if specific to sexual health and HIV
Management
Essential criteria
- Clear understanding of the management structure within the secondary care environment
- Understanding of own role within the management structure
