Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic, enthusiastic and highly motivated, forward thinking Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist Team Leader, who would be adopted by MacMillan, to work within the Specialist Palliative Care team. The post is predominantly a community based position but is part of a team of specialist palliative care nurses covering the hospital and community seven days a week including bank holidays. This service is part of the Integrated Community Services Division who provide a multitude of services within Bolton. Experience of working in specialist palliative care is essential and experience in community is desirable and the successful candidate will receive a full supportive induction when they join the Division and the team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be a proven team player with excellent communication and teaching skills with significant, relevant experience. The role will involve leadership of a team of specialist palliative care nurses and admin.  This Leadership role will include:  roster management, induction of new staff, mentorship, appraisals, organisational and service development and audit, support and deputisation in the absence of the clinical service lead and hospital/ therapy team leader.  They will contribute to the provision of specialist palliative and end of life care to the people of Bolton with advanced life shortening disease, working autonomously and as part of a team. They will deliver clinical interventions across care settings providing advice, education and support to patients, their carers and other health care professionals. They will also promote advance care planning, management of complex end of life symptoms and patient and carer expectations whilst meeting the integrated care needs of the patient and preventing inappropriate admissions to hospital. In addition, they will be able to contribute to the development of services, teaching, audit and research.

Specialist Palliative Care services have been developed, over the years, in an integrated and collaborative manner between the hospital, community, and Bolton Hospice, reflecting excellent co-operation between the organisations and a patient centred whole-team approach.

Royal Bolton Hospital currently has approximately 600 inpatient beds, serving the population of Bolton and others from neighbouring areas. It is one of the busiest hospitals in the NW for emergency admissions. It has a cancer unit, with close links to the Christie Hospital. It has an oncology unit providing clinics and chemotherapy, and has a developing Acute Oncology service.

 

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To assess, treat and manage own specialist caseload of patients/clients in the most appropriate setting eg. inpatient, outpatient or community.
To provide specialist advice to other disciplines and services
To work within codes of practice, standards and policies and procedures to providing the day to day management of the Specialist Palliative care nurses

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First level dgree/diploma
  • relevant post registration qualification
  • NMC qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching qualification
  • Palliative care qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant broad base of clinical post grad experience prior to specialising
  • Significant experience in palliative care or relevant speciality
  • Evidence of teaching skills and experience
  • Ability to work independently as an autonomous practitioner
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist palliative care experience
  • Notable experience at band 6 or above within a palliative care environment
  • Experience of supervising students/junior staff
