Job overview

We are looking for a highly organised medical secretary with experience in a similar setting to undertake this challenging role within the Gastroenterology Department based at the Royal Bolton Hospital. The post holder will work as part of a dynamic team and be an excellent communicator, organised and able to work well under pressure. 

Candidates should be articulate, capable of undertaking a demanding workload and must be able to demonstrate a significant level of initiative. 

You must be able to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to prioritise workload and be able to work with little or no supervision. You should be able to integrate well with the existing team and have a genuine desire to provide a quality service to all patients.

Interviewees will be asked to complete a typing test.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will often be the first point of contact for the service requiring clear communication and liaison skills. They will be responsible for prioritising their own workload and will be required to use their own initiative.

The post holder will require a high degree of organisational skills and excellent working knowledge of administrative systems, with the ability to communicate to staff and patients at all levels.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will work alongside other Senior Medical Secretaries and carry out personal assistant duties, clinical typing and co-ordination of patients’ case notes/test results, update RTT pathways amongst other general office duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • • GCSE English language Grade C or equivalent
  • • GCSE Maths Grade C or equivalent
  • • RSA Level 2 Word and Text Processing or equivalent level qualification
  • Computer Skills
Desirable criteria
  • RSA Level 3 Word and Text Processing or equivalent level qualification
  • AMSPAR qualification

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • • Secretarial experience
  • • Able to demonstrate experience of working with a variety of professionals
  • • Audio transcription skills
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office
Desirable criteria
  • Experienced medical secretary in a healthcare setting
  • Direct experience of working for medical consultants and/or other senior professionals
  • Competent in the use of an NHS Patient Administration System

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • • Sound knowledge of medical terminology
  • • Understanding of NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of medical terminology with more than one speciality
  • Knowledge of Caldicott Principles and the Data Protection Act 2018
