We have a new vacant Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) post available for candidate with relevant experience in Cellular Pathology to work on a permanent basis within our Histopathology department at Royal Bolton Hospital. 

The department has full HCPC training status for pre and post registration IBMS portfolios and  UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189

 

Main duties of the job

This role will involve the receipt of the departments workload/specimens, ensuring quality checks are adhered  to support he maintenance of the departments turnaround times for providing  a diagnostic process. The role provides assistance to  Consultants and BMS staff in the dissection, processing and reporting of tissue samples as well as non-gynae and andrology specimens. The  successful candidates will be expected to maintain all protocols within the department, in line with ISO 15189 standards. You will work as part of a team of highly dedicated scientific staff to ensure the quality of all tests performed using internal and external quality schemes. You will be involved in auditing processes, reagent control, and maintenance of equipment. You will rotate through each section of the Histopathology lab undertaking departmental training to ensure maintenance of your own competencies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role involves supporting the Consultants and BMS staff to deliver a safe, high quality and timely diagnostic service to the trust patients. The main duties within the laboratory include the receipt of specimens, assisting BMS dissection, receipt of goods, machine/equipment maintenance. You will be expected to cover the rota  to help ensure the smooth running of department.

Experience in Histology is desirable.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE/CSE in English & Maths (GradeC/4 or above) or equivalent level qualification in these subjects
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ3 or working towards an appropriate qualification or equivalent experience or IBMS Biomedical Sciences Support Staff Certificate of Achievement Part 1

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of input and processing of high volumes data accurately and promptly
  • Evidence of experience of working as part of a team in a busy environment.
Desirable criteria
  • Exprerience within an NHS laboratory
  • Experience within the NHS

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Able to follow written procedures accurately
  • Able to work to a consistent and high standard
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of good interpersonal skills
  • Has manual dexterity to undertake low level maintenance of equipment.

knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Computer literate
  • Basic Knowledge of NHS Laboratory Functionality
  • Basic knowledge of standard operating procedures
Desirable criteria
  • GCSE/CSE (Grade C/4 or above) in IT related subject or equivalent level qualification
  • Evidence of extensive Laboratory/scientific knowledge.
