Job overview

The main objective of the role is to facilitate flow and discharges with medicine , A&E admissions and elective admissions , organisation of all internal transfers and external transfers and repatriations to and from other Trusts. The post holder must have excellent communication skills as coordination with a number of different departments is an essential part of the role. The post holder must demonstrate clinical excellence in contributing to the management of patients and develop strong working relationships with various teams including the Emergency Department.

The successful candidate must have an understanding of the A&E government targets and current issues that can affect the timely flow of patients through the hospital and appropriate operational process.

Main duties of the job

Would you like to be part of one of the best performing Trusts in Greater Manchester? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent Band 6 Bed Manager at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

This post will be internal rotation providing a 24/7 service. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, dynamic and well organised person to work as a bed manager in an extremely fast paced moving environment. You must be dedicated to delivering a high standard of care and optimising patient safety, by placing the right patients, in the right place, at the right time whilst maintaining privacy and dignity. You will be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and develop your skills and knowledge.

The post holder will be able to co-ordinate and collate real time information on current and predicted bed availability and facilitate the effective use of acute hospital and community wide bed capacity.

The post holder will work independently, using their own initiative/ judgement. This role is central to the flow of patients within the Trust and meeting the national waiting times for the emergency department and elective patients.

The successful candidate will have a sound clinical background with effective decision making skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To maintain the balance of demands for emergency / urgent admission to hospital 
bed with the planned programme of elective work.

To facilitate admissions of both emergency and elective activity.

To maintain an accurate knowledge of bed availability, liaising with relevant staff, receiving doctors and other hospitals as circumstances dictate.

To monitor and take action accordingly to prevent breach of the 4 hour target.

To liaise with outside agencies eg NWAS regarding capacity.

To work within bed management policies, liaising with senior management when appropriate. It is accepted that in extreme circumstances, bed management policies, liaising with senior management will exercise judgement on each occasion as to the most appropriate course of action.

Identify, collect and evaluate information to support clinical decisions making, ensure accurate recording of cancelled operations.

To assist with data collection, analysis and reporting.

To work flexibly across site as the situation demands.

To take responsibility for individual projects within the department.

The post holder must be conversant with all policies relating to the bed 
management department. In particular, the Greater Manchester Emergency Admissions Policy and the Emergency Clinical Quality standards, ensuring monitoring systems are in place and action taken as necessary.

The post holder will have sound managerial and interpersonal skills, 
demonstrating effective and efficient utilization of Trust bed stock. Must develop strong interpersonal skills with all levels of staff within the Trust 
exercising and demonstrating advanced level of reasoning knowledge and skill in the placing of patients.

The post holder will be able to act effectively in situations of severe bed 
pressures/crisis. Such situations could include fire and Major Incidents.

Contribute to all role related targets for achievement identified within the Trust Business Plan.

 Be responsible for the identification of own continuing educational needs and professional development. NMC, The Code, standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives, May 2008.

Ensure that trust policies are adhered to in relation to bed management.

Ensure risk management criteria are satisfied and adhered to in terms of 
accountability and competency.

Ensure that all documentations relating to the placement of patients is clear concise, legible, in accordance with the NMC, Record Keeping July 2007.

Comply with requests for data collection, data input and take part in subsequent audits as directed by the HoN.

Maintain your own safe standard of practice, at all times reporting concerns to the Head of Nursing.

Ensure awareness of the Major Incident Policy and understand the bed 
manager’s role within it.

Demonstrate the mandatory competencies of the Trust attending all required mandatory updates.

Liaise with all wards and departments to promote optimum bed usage.

Ensure the protocol for receiving GP calls is adhered to and agreed standards are met.

Ensure the 4 hour target protocol is adhered to, monitored and actioned as 
appropriate.

Participate in clinical audits as necessary.

Effectively collect and collate information to support clinical decision making.
