Senior Medical Secretary/Clerical Team Lead in Clinical Haematology

Job overview

We are looking for a highly organised part time senior medical secretary and clerical team lead with previous experience in a similar setting to undertake this challenging role within the Clinical Haematology admin team, based at the Royal Bolton Hospital. You will provide and manage a comprehensive secretarial service to the consultant haematologists, speciality doctors and clinical nurse specialists and will line manage the haematology clerical team. 

Candidates should be articulate, capable of undertaking a demanding workload and must be able to demonstrate a significant level of initiative. Candidates should possess advanced keyboard skills including a high standard of word processing skills to at least RSA II or equivalent level qualification/experience.  Previous medical secretarial experience and audio typing is essential.

You must be able to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to prioritise workload and be able to work with little or no supervision. You should be able to integrate well with the existing team and have a genuine desire to provide a quality service to all patients.

The post holder will work 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday, hours to be agreed.

Main duties of the job

Main responsibilities include: 

  • Supervision and line management of the Clinical Haematology admin team 
  • Typing clinical correspondence
  • Booking of follow up outpatient appointments
  • Coding of outpatient activity
  • Deal with telephone calls, both internal and external

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Maths GCSE Grade C or equivalent
  • English Language GCSE or Equivalent Grade C
  • RSA Level 2 Word and Text Processing or equivalent typing qualification and computer skills
Desirable criteria
  • Medical Secretarial AMSPAR qualification or equivalent
  • RSA Level 3 Word Processing and Text Processing

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Secretarial experience
  • Able to demonstrate experience of working with a variety of professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as a medical secretary in a healthcare setting
  • Direct experience of working for medical consultants and/or other senior professionals

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and telephone)
  • Audio transcription skills
  • Ability to react to unpredictable issues and re prioritising workload
Desirable criteria
  • Competent in the use of an NHS Patient Administrative System

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Sound knowledge of medical terminology
  • Understanding of the NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of medical terminology with more than one speciality
