Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is situated on the west coast of Lancashire, with services covering the local authority areas of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. The Trust is part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care System (ICS) supporting a population of around 1.6 million people.

We have three main hospitals providing acute services to around 330,000 local residents. The organisation also provides specialist tertiary care for cardiac and haematology services, delivers community health services to over 445,000 residents including those in North Lancashire and hosts the National Artificial Eye Service across England. Plus, we provide urgent and emergency care services to an estimated 18 million people who visit the seaside resort each year. We employ over 7000 people from 68 different countries.

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for candidates to join a dynamic consultant team for a 6 months period with the aim to advertise a substantive posts subsequently. The successful applicants will be expected to provide general obstetrics and gynaecology services, contributing to 60 hours of delivery suite presence, and contributing flexibly to the needs of the department to address performance targets in gynaecology and obstetrics. We offer flexible working options with working from home where feasible as well as speciality cover arrangements on discussion the Head of Department.

Main duties of the job

We have a forward-thinking Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology committed to developing and improving services for the women of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. There are currently 8 substantive consultants within the department, each with a special interest.

 

The Women’s and Children’s Unit bring together women’s and children’s services. There is an Antenatal and Gynaecology Clinic, a dedicated Maternity Day Unit and Maternity Ultrasound Department, Delivery Suite alongside a Midwifery-Led Unit.

 

There is an active Gynaecology Day Suite where Colposcopy and ambulatory gynaecology procedures are carried out. The unit deals with an average of 3000 deliveries per year. This building also houses a large level 2 neonatal unit.  The gynaecology beds are integrated into the female surgical wards and there is an early pregnancy assessment unit.

Legal Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of AAC).
  • Full registration with the GMC

Education and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • MB ChB or equivalent
  • MRCOG
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree (MD/PhD)

Management Skills

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of NHS organisation and core values of NHS
  • Understanding of the management responsibilities of NHS consultants
  • Participation in a management training course

Knowledge & Research

Essential criteria
  • Advanced Labourward ATSM or equivalent
  • Commitment to CPD and requirements of clinical governance and audit
Desirable criteria
  • ATSM in keeping with special interest.
  • A proven track record in self- directed research
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals

Skills and Ability

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills – both oral and written.
  • Effective teaching skills
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload and to delegate responsibility and supervise staff.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire a multi-disciplinary team and work sensitively within teams and across organisations
  • Involvement and evidence of implementation of service development and managing change in a healthcare setting
  • Leadership skills- ability to take responsibility, show leadership and make decisions
