Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to recruit a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) on the Surgical Admissions Unit. This post may include rotation with DSU. The admissions unit is responsible for ensuring patients are safely and effectively admitted prior to surgery. The unit is open Mon-Fri 7.00am until 5.30pm and Surgery also takes place on Saturdays and you will be on a rota to cover the weekends.
We are a forward thinking modern Foundation Trust and are looking to recruit a HCA who is highly motivated, open to change and demonstrates excellent communication skills. As an integral member of the team the post holder will assist and participate in the smooth running of the unit by providing support to their team and in the smooth pre-operative phase of patients care.
We have ten surgical theatres, three of which are dedicated day surgery. We have a fantastic team of staff and they would support any new member of the team. There would be a period of teaching and training for the successful candidate. There is also the opportunity for rotation between Pre-operative admissions and the Day surgery unit.
Main duties of the job
1. Taking and recording observations such as blood pressure temperature and O2 saturations ( if trained and competent)
2. Urialysis
3. Venepuncture ( If trained and competent)
4. Ensuring specimens are delivered to pathology
5. Stocking up the treatment room and consultationrooms
6. Chaperoning patients to scans or appointments
7. Case note delivery
8. Daily maintaining clean and safe treatment rooms
9. Ensuring patient identity and next of kin details are correct on all documentation
10. Completing and checking of specific paperwork documentation
11. To undertake such duties as maybe required from time to time and which are consistent with the responsibilities of the band and individuals level of competency

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Personal
1. Be prepared to undertake NVQ level 2 in care as part of the development of this role.
2. Attend in service training, study days,seminars, courses as rostered
3. Attend a yearly appraisal to set objectives and personal development plan for the following year.
General
1. Foster People’s Rights and Responsibilities
a) Ensure all Trust standards are met within your workload and that a quality service is provided at all times.
b) Ensure all patients’ requirements are met with dignity, sensitivity and empathy.
c) Be non-judgmental in your approach to client care and attitudes.
2. Maintain Confidentiality of Information
a) Assist trained staff to carry out nursing care ensuring the patients’ confidentiality and privacy are maintained.
b) Maintain confidentiality with regard to the Data Protection Act for all information received.
3. Monitor and Maintain the Safety and Security of the Work Environment
a) Ensure patients’ safety, comfort and welfare at all times.
b) Report accidents, incidents, losses as they occur to the nurse in charge.
c) Attend yearly up-dates on all statutory training, including basic life support and manual handling and moving.
d) The post holder must comply with all relevant policies, procedures and training on infection prevention and control.
4. Minimise the Risks Arising from Health Emergencies
a) Report untoward incidents and occurrences regarding changes in patient’s condition to the nurse in charge/named nurse as they arise.
b) Assist in emergency care once training undertaken.
5. Develop Relationships with People that value them as Individuals.
a) Liaise with nursing, medical and other disciplines within our defined clinical area and other departments and hospitals.
b) Be supportive to the patient and their family/carers at all times.
6. Store and Retrieve Records
a) Ensure patients’ notes are filed and up to date.
b) Ensure pathology results are filed as necessary.
7. Enable Patients to Maintain their Interests, Identity and Emotional Wellbeing whilst Receiving a Care Service
a) Anticipate and act on the physical and psychological needs of the patient and meet the same.
b) Provide a relaxed and professional environment conducive to promoting the wellbeing of the patient.
8. Contribute to the Effective Communication where there are Communication Differences
a) Provide effective working relationships with patients/relatives/carers/ nursing team/medical and multi-disciplinary teams.
b) Report any complaints to the nurse in charge immediately.
