Job overview

As an Apprentice Cardiac Physiologist you will be required to work under close supervision to gain the experience and qualifications required to become an autonomous practitioner within the CIU department. Training will be provided to develop your non-invasive skills, of which you will be expected to perform unsupervised once reaching a level of competence. Training will also be provided for specialised cardiac investigations such as interventional cardiology, permanent pacemaker implants & follow-up.

The Lancashire Cardiac Centre is a tertiary cardiac provider for the people of Lancashire & Cumbria. The centre has a well-established invasive and non-invasive services covering a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, these include;

Cardiac angiography & intervention, including Primary PCI, TAVI, ASD/PFO closure, device implants including ICD’s and CRT’s, device follow-ups, EP simple and complex, including NAVX, PVAC and CRYO. Echocardiography, including TOE, contract/bubble and DSE. All these areas are developing rapidly with new technology

The Cardiac Investigations Unit is seeking an enthusiastic, reliable and highly motivated individual to undertake a level 6 apprenticeship in Healthcare Science with a view to qualifying as a Cardiac Physiologist. We are looking for candidates who will relish the challenge of being part of the team that will be taking our department forward into the future.

Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is ideally situated just a forty five minute drive from Manchester. The Trust provides services to the 440,000 residents of Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre and North Lancashire, as well as specialist tertiary care for Cardiac and Haematology patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Successful applicants will be expected to start the degree in September 2025.

Candidates will require a minimum of five GSCEs including Maths and English (certificates must be provided) and 120 UCAS Tariff points at A2 (please refer to the person specification for details). We are happy to accept candidates with A-Level results pending. The ideal candidate would hold a level 3 qualification, however applications from graduates with science related degrees will be considered.

As part of the Apprenticeship you will be expected to undertake a level 6 apprenticeship in Healthcare Science qualification.

Due to the current Government eligibility criteria for Government funded apprenticeship schemes, we are currently only able to accept applications from candidates who have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years, and who are not already in any form of Government funded education.

If successful after Interview, a BKSB assessment must be completed within 2 weeks of receiving the conditional offer to ascertain you are eligible to undertake an apprentice programme.

Education & qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 5 GCSEs grade C (4) and above including Maths and English
  • 120 Tariff points at A2 including grade C Biology, Human Biology or applied science or Level 3 BTEC DDM including 60 credits from a science subject (applications with results pending accepted)
Desirable criteria
  • Degree (BSc Hons) in a Biology or Sports science related subject (applications with results pending accepted)
