An unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced Speech & Language Therapist to move into a Clinical and Operational lead role within the Adult SLT Service. This post sits within the Therapies directorate, in the Clinical Support Services division of Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The role is responsible for the adult speech and language therapy services across our acute hospital, rehab hospital and community.

This post will call upon your leadership and clinical abilities, as well as offer opportunities to develop and grow personally.

Alongside the Head of Therapies, the post holder will be responsible for the operational management, development and delivery of the Speech and Language Therapy Service. The role will ensure the provision of a high quality, safe and responsive service within the available resources.

• Perform specialist clinical skills in the assessment and treatment of patients including the ability to undertake high level objective assessments, such as video fluoroscopy.

• Support the Speech & Language Therapy workforce and optimise recruitment, retention and well-being of staff to maximise performance.

• Development and monitoring of patient-centred clinical practice and best standards of clinical care.

• Provide clinical and professional leadership for the Speech & Language Therapists.

• Work collaboratively with key partners to ensure the service meets the needs of the local population and contractual targets.

• Support the development and implementation of revised and agreed care pathways, ensuring improvements are delivered.

• Ensure commissioned service specifications are delivered.

• Responsible for financial management of the relevant budget.

The Clinical Support Services Division is dynamic and forward thinking, based on strong working relationships, where openness and transparency is key.

The successful applicant will form part of the Therapies senior leadership team, under the management of the Head of Therapies. As such, there is a strong peer support network and dedicated AHP leadership.

Education & Qualifications

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent.
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) Registration
  • Evidence of successful completion of relevant specialist short course/qualification up to Master’s degree equivalent
  • Evidence of successful post graduate dysphagia training

  • Evidence of successful post graduate training in videofluoroscopy and/or FEES
  • Successful completion of leadership training
  • MSc qualification in specialist area, or working towards one

Experience & Knowledge

  • Experience of collaborative multi-disciplinary and inter-agency working.
  • Knowledge of the principles underpinning mentoring & coaching of others and experience applying these in staff development.
  • Experience is managing performance of others where roles and responsibilities are not being achieved as would be expected.
  • Experience in the development of policies, procedures & practice guidance.
  • Experience of developing and using relevant outcome measures.
  • Knowledge of and experience of clinical supervision and appraisal of others.
  • Knowledge of the principles surrounding quality, safety and risk in relevant settings as related to the service.
  • Experience in operational management activities including budget management.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and experience in its clinical application.

  • In-depth knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions and evidence of highly specialist clinical expertise relevant to this caseload
  • Knowledge of national policies, guidelines and legislation as well as relevant national strategy and drivers.
  • Knowledge of Quality Improvement process & project management and experience in same.

Skills & Ability

  • Highly specialist experience and skills in the diagnosis, treatment and general management of a wide range of swallowing and communication difficulties within the adult population including supporting mental capacity assessments.
  • Highly developed clinical reasoning, analytical and reflection skills.
  • Excellent communication skills including oral presentation skills, negotiation and problem-solving skills in complex situations and ability to facilitate these skills in others.
  • Able to deal with difficult and sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including observation, listening, empathy and ability to establish a positive rapport with others.
  • Ability to provide strong clinical and operational leadership including managing others through change.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as a part of a team.
  • Good computer literacy with high level of accuracy including ablity to undertake basic analysis of data and use electronic clinical records system.
  • Responsive to change ideas, adaptive and creative in developing new ways of working.
