Job overview

The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs, implementation and evaluation of the critically ill patient and the supervision of junior staff.

You are responsible of management of critical care in the absence of the band 7 or matron.

This involves the overall management and co ordination of patient needs. 

To provide specialist patient treatment to the highest clinical standards. 

Main duties of the job

  • To support managment in the delivery of flexible, integrated critical care services.
  • To provide clinical, effective and safe care along side managerial and clinical leadership.
  • To debutise in the senior teams absence.
  • to co ordinate the admission and discharge of patients in accordance of the unit practice.
  • To constantly use clinical judgement to assess the  complex clinical need of the critically ill patient.
  • To act as a mentor and assessor for developing staff whilst mantaining own professional standards.
  • To lead on complex care and planned discharges as required.
  • Ensure the effective use of staffing and clinical skills.
  • To attend unit mettings and support senior management plans.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable a high level of competency and current band 5/6 experience in Level 2/3 critical care.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse Level 1
  • Completed Mentorship Module
  • Completed post registration intensive care course.
  • ILS competent
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of continued development e.g. basic degree qualification.

Work Skills

Essential criteria
  • High standards of written accuracy
  • Ability to understand, absorb and comply with detailed procedures.
  • Demonstrable able to manage more than one task at once.
  • Able to perform as a shift leader.
  • Involvement in wider critical care related activities e.g. link nurse, essence of care

Learning ability

Essential criteria
  • Able to take onboard new ideas, skills and knowledge.
  • Able to manage priorities under pressures
  • Able to teach, mentor and support other staff development.
  • Able to use own initiative and work without close supervision within agreed protocols
