Consultant Haematologist

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic colleague to work in a team of 5 consultants/specialists. 

Main duties of the job

We provide a clinical and laboratory service, managing a full range of haematological conditions to BCSH level 2a. Clinical haematology in-patient beds are shared with Integrated Care team. The friendly department has recently been expanded to include two Specialty Doctors, one JCF, an Advanced Practitioner, four Clinical Nurse Specialists (one for Haemoglobinopathies), a Cancer Support Worker and two transfusion practitioners. The modern Blood Sciences laboratory is ISO15189 UKAS Accredited.

Working for our organisation

ELHT holds a weekly independent haemato-oncology MDT, with diagnostic services provided by HMDS Leeds and Radiotherapy services provided by Royal Preston Hospital. The MDT is highly rated in the recent cancer peer review. Autologous transplant services are provided by Royal Victoria Hospital Blackpool.

Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine

All major disciplines are included with the exception of Virology and Immunology which are centralised at Preston.  

The Haematology MDT at ELHT has met the QSIS standard at a higher level across the region.  The diagnostic service is provided by the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Department of Blood Sciences is UKAS accredited.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder should have a broad training in clinical and laboratory haematology and must hold full and specialist registration with a licence to practise with General Medical Council. Additionally they should be holder of Certificate of Completion of Training or be within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by the date of interview. Development of an area of special interest will be encouraged and the post holder will be expected to participate in the on-call rota, providing advice and clinical help across hospital and community. The successful candidate is expected to undertake Clinics at both Royal Blackburn site and Burnley General Hospital. We have active educational programmes and the post holder is expected to participate in Core Medical Trainee and undergraduate teaching.

Essential criteria
  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
  • If a UK trainee, Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or within six months of award of CCT by date of interview If applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification

TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in one or more subspecialty areas and ability to take a lead role in that area

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Practical -Diagnosis and management of wide range of haematology disorders
  • Audit - Understanding and experience of performing audit during general professional and higher specialist training
  • Teaching - Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and commitment to these within the Trust
  • Research Awareness of basic research methods Familiarity with evidence based practice
Desirable criteria
  • Attendance at courses in teaching, appraisal and mentorship
  • Previous research projects/publications

CONTINUING PROF DEVELOPMENT

  • Clear commitment to lifelong learning
  • Experience of evidence based medicine
  • Ability to keep up to date in the speciality

  • Membership of appropriate post-graduate societies.

MANAGEMENT

  • Understanding of current NHS management systems including clinical governance and risk management.

  • Communication and Relationships - Ability to communicate with colleagues and users of the service including patients and their relatives
  • Supervision - Experience of supervision of trainees
  • Leadership - Ability to lead the development of services and provoke best practice amongst the colleagues in a changing environment
  • Teamwork - Ability to work in a team with professional colleagues both medical and non-medical
Desirable criteria
  • Communication and Relationships - Attendance at e.g. Death/Bereavement or Breaking News workshops and Counselling courses
  • Leadership - Evidence of development of leadership within the work environment

CIRCUMSTANCES

  • Agree to live within 30 minutes travel time of the Trust unless permitted otherwise
  • Able to travel to meet the requirements of the post
