East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking dedicated stroke physicians to join their high-performing Stroke MDT, providing daily consultant-led care and support to patients on the stroke unit. The role involves contributing to clinical governance, risk management, and providing teaching and supervision to junior medical staff. The trust is undergoing a reconfiguration of unscheduled care services, including the opening of a HASU as part of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Stroke service. This full-time substantive post supports the comprehensive service for older patients, both in the hospital and the community, and offers opportunities for research and teaching.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Delivering daily consultant-led care to stroke patients and supporting the stroke unit staff.
  • Contributing to clinical governance, risk management, and ensuring appropriate standards of care.
  • Providing teaching, educational, and clinical supervision to junior medical staff.
  • Participating in the delivery of 7-day TIA and rapid access clinics.
  • Collaborating in the reconfiguration of unscheduled care services, including opening a HASU.
  • Supporting sub-acute rehabilitation for stroke patients in community hospitals and settings.
  • Sharing responsibility for acute and rehabilitation stroke wards.
  • Participating in medical audit and postgraduate teaching.
  • Being part of the MDT on acute and rehabilitation stroke units.
  • Participating in acute stroke and Telestroke rotas.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with management and consultant colleagues to develop the stroke medicine service.
  • Support sub-acute rehabilitation for stroke patients in community hospitals and settings.
  • Provide TIA service at RBH.
  • Ensure ongoing clinical responsibility for patients, coordinating with colleagues in medicine for older people.
  • Contribute to consultant cover during leave.
  • Develop and promote services that minimize hospital stay and promote recovery and independent living.
  • Participate in medical audit and maintain clinical governance.
  • Provide professional supervision, direction, and training to junior medical staff.
  • Engage in postgraduate teaching activities.
  • Attend meetings of the Directorate of Medicine for Older People, Rehabilitation, and Stroke.
  • Be an integral part of the MDT on acute and rehabilitation stroke units.
  • Participate in the Hot Consultant acute stroke rota (1 in 6 weekdays 8 am to 6.00 pm).
  • Contribute to the Lancashire and Cumbria Telestroke rota (1 in 1).
  • Share responsibility for acute and rehabilitation stroke wards.

Attainments

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with General Medical Council
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register or due admission to register within six months
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • CCT or within 6 months of CCT or CESR
Desirable criteria
  • A higher degree such as MD, MSc, PhD or equivalent.

Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience in teaching undergraduates, post-graduates, nurses and professions allied to medicine
  • Experience of clinical audit and understanding of the process
