Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic, motivated colleague who is expected to be competent in emergency general surgery as well as open and minimally invasive HPB major Surgery. The post holder will be key to developing the pathways and service provisions for biliary and pancreatic diseases.  

A higher degree, HPB publications and ongoing HPB research interests are highly desirable. Opportunities to undertake research and be part of the UCLan faculty are also encouraged. 

Besides committing to the delivery of emergency surgery, prospective appointees will be expected to offer care in one or more of the following areas:

  • Management of HPB malignancies, including resections
  • Management of complex benign HPB pathologies, including laparoscopic bile duct exploration
  • Management and interventions for acute and chronic pancreatitis
  • A consultant HPB surgeon with any other subspecialist areas of interest (e.g. EUS trained with an interest in endoscopic necrosectomy) will be considered favourably.

Main duties of the job

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in HPB.

The successful applicant will join the team of HPB surgeons, with similar expansion already undertaken in the Colorectal service. 

The Trust hosts Specialist HPB Centre of the Lancashire and South Cumbria Region. 

The appointee should be have a broad training in general surgery with competency in both elective and emergency general surgery.  Please note the job plan advertised is an example.

Any applicant should have entry on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of being placed on the Register.

Minimum Requirements:

Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with license to practice

Entry on specialist register via: -

  • CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview)
  • CESR or European Community Rights
  • FRCS or equivalent

Working for our organisation

The HPB Service is made up of 7 Consultant Surgeons covering a local population of over 600,000 and is a specialist tertiary referral centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria as well as surrounding areas, whilst also providing support for the regional Trauma Centre at Preston.

The Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital leads the regional HPB cancer MDT, as well as a specialist Neuroendocrine MDT. In addition there is a separate weekly ERCP MDT.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

At all times the appointee will abide by the following principles:

  • Be expected to provide a patient centred service, respecting the privacy, dignity and choice of individual patients. They will be responsible along with General Surgery colleagues for the provision of outpatient and inpatient services within the East Lancashire Hospital Trust.
  • Aim to deliver high quality care with the help of the existing surgical team.
  • Be a team player and flexible with your approach.
  • Be involved in complex clinical, patient management problems and multi-disciplinary planning treatment.
  • Attend the Wednesday ERCP meeting and contribute to the hot gall bladder service.
  • On appointment the candidate will have a prescribed number of theatre sessions to deliver during the financial year and an associated level of activity.
  • Share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate.
  • Ensure all dictation of clinical letters within 24 hours (mandatory)
  • Observe and comply with clinical and non-clinical policies and procedures (including local and national employment and personnel policies) agreed with employees and management. In particular, the post holder will be responsible for updating policies and guidelines for the General Surgery service along with colleagues, which should be reviewed annually.
  • Provide support to the complaints process (this may include attending complaint meetings with patients, families and their relatives).
  • Be closely involved in clinical audit and other clinical governance issues.
  • Support the Trainee’s and Trust Doctors in the daily duties and on-going learning.

Attainments

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • Entry on GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights
  • MBChB
  • Appropriate higher surgical qualifications (e.g. FRCS)
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate thesis/Higher Degree (E.g. MD/Ph.D)

Training

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in relevant specialty
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective Heptobiliary and General Surgery
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Sufficient experience to join the general surgery consultant on call rota
Desirable criteria
  • Fellowship in a HpB Subspecialty
  • Expertise in acute and chronic pancreatitis
