Lead Nurse/Professional for Mental Health

We are looking for an experienced Registered Nurse (RMN), AHP and/or Registered Social Worker to become the Lead Nurse/Professional at East Lancashire Hospitals in the care of patients who are admitted to the acute Trust with Mental Health concerns. 

The role will be based within the Safeguarding Team and will be 50% clinical and 50% strategic.  You will be working alongside our Lead Nurse for Dementia, Lead Nurse for Learning Disability and Lead Nurse for Enhanced Care, whilst being integrated into the wider Safeguarding Team.  The post will be all age and will include the care of children and adults. 

You will also work very closely with our colleagues within Lancashire Care Foundation Trust who are the local Mental Health provider. 

This is an exciting new opportunity to develop a service including policies, pathways, risk assessments and strategies in line with local and national priorities for mental health. 

You will need to be an autonomous practitioner with a proven track record of being able to successfully lead  and embed change in a large organisation, along with the clinical skills and expertise to support patients experiencing mental health concerns whilst in the acute Trust environment. 

The role will be challenging but very rewarding.  You will be supported to develop in the role by the Head of Safeguarding and the wider senior team.

The main duties of the role include:

  1. Provide expert professional, clinical leadership and advice ensuring the needs of people with mental health concerns, their families and carers are met by exercising and demonstrating high levels of clinical judgement, critical analysis and advanced decision-making skills.

 

  1. Provide and utilise advance comprehensive assessment, care planning and psycho-social interventions to enhance the quality of life of those affected by mental health and their carers/ families.

 

  1. Provide visible, strategic leadership on the delivery and evaluation of evidence-based care in accordance with the Mental Health Act (1983 & 2007), lead and inspire system changes to improve standards for people including children and young people with mental health and their carers/families through supervision, evidence-based practice, clinical audit, research and education. 

 

  1. Lead on the delivery and evaluation of workforce development requirements to support delivery of improved clinical skills, through investment of knowledge, skills and competencies to support families/carers.

 

  1. Develop and monitor evaluation of key performance and quality indicators, to increase evidence of impact relating to mental health, which includes the experience of people with mental health concerns and their family/carer experience.

The Safeguarding Team at East Lancashire Hospitals is an all age service supporting colleagues, services and patients to ensure that safeguarding is embedded into practice and a key priority. We are led by a Head of Safeguarding and have a team of highly skilled professionals and administrative staff who are responsible for children and adult safeguarding. 

The team is committed to providing safeguarding advice, support, supervision and training for all ELHT staff across 5 sites and community services.

COMMUNICATION

 

1.    Provide complex information to the Trust, locally and nationally when explaining strategy and organisational decisions where negotiation and persuasion is necessary.

 

2.    Report to Head of Safeguarding findings/risks relating to Trust Mental Health Strategy to ensure effective dissemination of information regarding the strategy and present to the Executive Team when required.

 

3.    Ensure systems and processes are in place which facilitate and enable multi-professional team working.

 

4.    Ensure confidentiality is maintained in all aspects and levels of communication pertaining to patients, carers and staff, in line with East Lancashire Hospitals Trust policy.

 

5.    Provide and receive highly complex and sensitive information, anticipating barriers to communication whilst recognising factors that may influence the situation and pro-actively seeking out solutions to improve communication.

 

6.    Provide empathy and reassurance when communicating highly sensitive information or advice to patients, carers, families or employees.

 

7.    Manage distressing and emotional situations.

 

8.    Identify and manage challenging behaviours.

 

9.    Work collaboratively with teams and senior leaders.

 

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

 

  1. Develop & lead the educational strategy in the field of mental health and add to the evidence base for all patients (all age), thereby providing increased support for families/carers.

 

  1. Lead and develop the workforce to ensure skills, competencies and training needs are identified in order to deliver improved patient care for people with mental health concerns and their families. This will include working with senior professional colleagues to enable the development of advanced knowledge and skills.

 

  1. Lead on the implementation and delivery of the required education programmes for all staff and lead on the development of required training packages/induction programmes.

 

  1. Participate in and present as appropriate in agreement with East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust at local, regional, national events and conferences.

 

  1. Critically appraise outcomes of research in mental health services, using the findings to influence and support implementation of evidence based best practice.

 

  1. Lead on the utilisation of research findings specific to the field of mental health to develop practice in the organisation.

 

  1. Identify and respond to own development needs, taking responsibility for keeping up to date with new developments.

 

  1. Establish a partnership between the Trust and academic staff at local universities to explore appropriate academic pre/post registration programmes.

 

ORGANISATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Ensure that the service delivery model and future service needs are implemented in accordance with best practice and relevant local and national policies.

 

  1. Lead and deliver quality assurance programmes, including assessing risk and ensuring adequate measures are in place to safeguard patients, protect staff and families/carers.

 

  1. Support the development of an inquisitive approach and culture change within clinical practice to enable the delivery of excellent person-centred care and support for families/carers.

 

  1. Lead on influencing the strategic development of nursing research and development at a local, regional and national level as appropriate.

 

  1. Lead on developing, implementing and reviewing a Trust wide all age mental health strategy, reviewing the overall aims of the strategy within the organisation to develop an operational framework and future Trust mental health strategy.

 

  1. Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop research programmes to enhance the experience of the person with mental health concerns, their families and carers.

 

  1. Ensure accurate data collation, to inform service evaluation and audit procedures.

 

  1. Work collaboratively with our internal colleagues within ELCAS and external colleagues across LSCFT and the Integrated Care Board (ICB) to develop key performance indicators and an evaluation plan.

 

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Provide professional leadership by developing, communicating and implementing a strategy for improving care for people (all age) with mental health concerns and their families/carers, exerting a Trust-wide influence on professional practice.

 

  1. Be recognised as an expert professional leader within the field of mental health, providing consultancy in mental health ensuring all advice and services provided are evidence-based and in line with national and local policies, guidelines with the Mental Health Act (1983 & 2007).

 

  1. Work collaboratively with key stakeholders to ensure representation of trust at expert level in developing and influencing local policy and practice.

 

  1. Continually review, evaluate and develop own practice in order to reflect service need; appropriately managing own workload accordingly.

 

  1. To act as a visible clinical leader, working as a role model with individuals (including Allied Health Professionals), across teams and departments to ensure that practice is evidence based, standards are met to evidence improved patient outcomes and family/carer satisfaction levels.

 

  1. Provide line management, clinical supervision and coaching responsibilities to staff, as appropriate, supporting and inspiring colleagues to improve standards and quality and improve professional practice.

 

  1. To act as a change agent, and innovator; planning, instigating and evaluating change as part of a cycle of continuous improvement.

 

  1. Advise, appraise and support the Chief Nurse of professional nursing and care issues within the specialty.

 

  1. Network locally, regionally and nationally to share best practice and benchmark services.

 

  1. Ensure public and patient involvement in the wider work of promoting and developing mental health services.

 

  1. Developing policies, both locally and cross divisionally, to support clinical care and practice within mental health and ensuring the implementation of policies across the service.

 

  1. Produce professional reports relating to practice and/or service delivery as required by the organisation.

 

  1. Chair the Trust’s Mental Health Strategy meetings, liaising where appropriate with the Clinical Lead to ensure actions are completed in a timely manner and following up on actions required.

 

  1. Work as an autonomous practitioner, interpreting clinical and professional policies to demonstrate key responsibility and accountability for effective care delivery.
