Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Band 6 - Full Time  - Permanent 

Applications are invited from HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientists with the relevant Haematology & Blood Transfusion experience and qualifications to join our busy Blood Science department.

Applicants without Specialist portfolio but with equivalent higher qualification or experience will be considered but will be expected to complete Specialist portfolio within a specified timeframe if successful.

Tameside General Hospital is situated eight miles to the east of Manchester and serves a population of approximately 250,000. The hospital is situated for both easy access to both central Manchester and the Peak District.

We are looking for a keen, enthusiastic and suitably qualified individual to join our small but friendly team. We are a fully computerised laboratory (iSoft Telepath), with electronic links to the wards and local GPs. The Blood Sciences Department is well equipped with 2 x Beckman DxH 800 (Haematology), 2 x Werfen ACL TOP 350, 2 x Ortho Vision (Transfusion), 1 x Beckman Automate (pre-analytics), 2 x Beckman AU5800 (Biochemistry), 2 x Beckman DxI (Immunoassay), Tosoh G11 (HbA1c/ HbV) and Sebia Hydrasys (Electrophoresis).

We are UKAS accredited and a HCPC accredited training laboratory. Applicants will be expected to participate in our 9 week continuous shift pattern which provides the 24 hour service required for each department.

To work as a Biomedical Scientist in Haematology/Blood Transfusion as part of the out of hours 24/7 shift rota (currently 1:9)

PERSONAL PROFILE

Specialist Biomedical Scientists are registered with the Health Professions Council and will have achieved the IBMS Specialist Portfolio or equivalent.

Specialist Biomedical Scientists are engaged in Continuing Professional Development to improve their knowledge of certain techniques and to increase the breadth of basic skills acquired for registration.

Specialist Biomedical Scientists are able to carry out all the analytical repertoire of the department, and will have gained a greater depth of knowledge in some areas.

Specialist Biomedical Scientists generally work without guidance or supervision to complete delegated tasks involved in the delivery of a clinical pathology service that enables high standards of patient care. Specialist Biomedical Scientists work as an autonomous practitioners to provide a pathology service for the Trust outside routine working hours.

Specialist Biomedical Scientists are good problem solvers and as members of a team are required to be good communicators to ensure effective continuity of the service.

Specialist Biomedical Scientists carry out analyses on blood, body fluids, tissues and cells to determine the presence or absence of disease; this enables diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of the effectiveness of treatment. Biomedical Scientists also carry out population screening for inherited or malignant disorders.

Specialist Biomedical Scientists are highly skilled in the use of the latest biomedical techniques, utilising expensive and complex instrumentation alongside more traditional manual methods of investigation requiring considerable dexterity and hand eye co-ordination.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Technical

  1. To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations on a rotational basis within the Blood Science Department as required.

  2. To ensure the standard operating procedures (SOPs) are in place and adhered to. To participate in the regular review and update of SOPs.
  1. Ensure that equipment is used in accordance with departmental policies and supplier’s instructions.

  2. To undertake routine and more complex maintenance procedures on the analysers within The Department. To carry out appropriate internal maintenance procedures and maintain maintenance records.

  3. To plan and organise their own work within the demands of the team.

  4. To undertake technical validation of multiple complex sets of results from laboratory investigations ensuring accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols. Also to assess the validity of the results as to whether conflicting information is due to the pathology of the patient, contamination or compromised integrity of the sample prior to release of the results for clinical validation.

  5. To measure and monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory investigations within their Section using appropriate quality control procedures.

  6. To carry out corrective action and inform senior staff when the quality control procedures indicate loss of performance.

  7. To prepare reagents required for laboratory investigations.

  8. To report any instance or event which may cause service delivery failure.
