Wheelchair Therapist - Band 6

Bromley Wheelchair Service is looking for a Band 6 Therapist to join the team to cover maternity leave from August 2024-March 2025. You will need to be a registered Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist with experience of working with children or adults with physical disabilities in community or acute settings.

This exciting opportunity is open to internal staff and would enable anyone with a keen interest in seating and posture, and musculoskeletal or neurological conditions.

The role will be based at the new Ruxley Wheelchair Site co-located with Inspire Community Trust. Wheelchair Clinics are run from this site where access to wheelchairs and accessories has the benefit of quick provision and adaptations when needed. Visits to patients own homes, care homes and school clinics may also be included with this role. 

You will receive comprehensive training, support and supervision from the experienced and skilled clinicians, engineers and administrators within the team.

Main duties of the job

The wheelchair service provides clinically based assessment and prescription of wheelchairs, specialist buggies, pressure cushions, wheelchair accessories and special seating to clients with a physical disability lasting more than six months and who have a Bromley GP. The Wheelchair Service also provides a maintenance and repairs service, currently provided by a contractor.

Key aspects of the wheelchair therapy role include:

To act as a Senior Therapist within the Wheelchair Service with responsibility for the provision of therapy services to patients in a range of domiciliary and residential settings, and assessments for wheelchairs and seating in clinics and the home environment.

To undertake assessments of a wide range of complex patients. To use clinical reasoning skills in line with evidence based practice. To formulate and implement intervention plans and to facilitate patients to manage their own health and wellbeing.

To be responsible for enabling the patient to achieve and maintain a level of
independent functioning in order to remain at home or in the most appropriate alternative community setting.

To work as part of the multi-disciplinary Wheelchair Service Team in a variety of settings, assessing, planning and prescribing wheelchairs and posture management systems for clients of all ages with a variety of clinical conditions.

Be responsible for the day to day management and clinical supervision of junior staff and therapy students including appraisal.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To establish and maintain a high level of clinical practice in
order to provide and contribute to an effective clinical service.

To have a sound knowledge and treatment expertise of the relevant conditions referred into the service including: Musculo-skeletal, respiratory, orthopaedic, elderly fallers and neurological to enable informed treatment, management and interventions.

To manage and prioritise a caseload of clients with complex needs.

To set and develop patient orientated goals and treatment plans in liaison
with the Multidisciplinary Team/other health care professionals.

To keep up to date with clinical developments and refine treatments in line with evidence -based practice and clinical effectiveness.

To fulfil all legal requirements and demonstrate clinical reasoning within
documentation.

To plan and organise ordering and delivery of a broad range of equipment; and provide correct advice, instruction and training for carers/clients in the use of this equipment.

To participate in health promotion programmes as required, including the coordination, preparation and delivery of service specific training.

To manage own emotional responses and remain objective, calm and professional with patients in high emotional and physical distress.

To offer assessment, advice and recommendations to patients, carers and/or other professionals regarding specialist equipment for the promotion of independence and safety.

To instruct patients and their carers in the safe use of the equipment and advise on private purchase.

Essential criteria
  • Diploma/degree in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy
Desirable criteria
  • Previous attendance at wheelchair prescriber's course

  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of primary and secondary rehabilitation
  • Knowledge and application of Physiotherapy/OT assessments and intervention relevant to patient group
  • Able to analyse professional and ethical issues
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation in relation to current practice
  • Access to car for work purposes/ UK driving License
  • Competent IT / MS Office

  • Evidence of contributing to Audit and evaluation
  • Previous experience of EMIS system
  • Previous experience of BEST system

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post graduate experience.
  • Evidence of clinical Evidence of some experience in wheelchair assessment and prescription experience in the assessment and treatment of musculo-skeletal, neurological, orthopaedic and respiratory patients.
  • Experience of multi professional working.
  • Documented evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • Experience in a Community Setting
