ENT Clinical Nurse Specialist

Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a clinical nurse specialist in  Head and neck cancer to join our established MDT caring for patients attending Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells for diagnosis & treatment at the Kent oncology centre.

You will work independently alongside out MDT colleagues in providing expert support and symptom management for patients with Head and Neck Cancer. You will  work closely with our MDT colleagues, supporting both consultant and nurse led clinics. 

Main duties of the job

  • Work as part of the MDT team and have previous oncology experience. 
  • Work closely with the Clinical Oncologists and the wider MDT.
  • Act as a key worker for patients.
  • Provide specialist knowledge and support to patients by phone or in person while in clinic.
  • Act as liaison when required. 
  • Manage an independent workload.

You will develop, implement and evaluate a seamless specialist service, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of clinical care. You will act as a lead specialist, demonstrating a high level of expertise and developing the Head and Neck CNS service, providing specialist advice, education and support to patients, their carers/relatives and health care professionals. You will actively undertake clinical audits and research within the specialist area. 

You will be responsible for contributing to the on-going development of clinical practice, research and standards of care within the service, including development of policies, protocols and guidelines and contribute to service developments in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues, to include the undertaking of Peer Review. The Head and Neck CNS will also ensure the safety and well-being of service users, and always work in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person-centred care principles. This post does not encompass line-management responsibility.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Once your pre-employment checks have been completed you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date which will be in line with one of our Corporate Inductions.

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics.  The programme is full-time (please email [email protected] if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service Check at Enhanced Level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children)

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Level 1 Registration
  • BSc/1st degree (Health Related) or equivalent qualification / training and experience
  • Post registration in cancer/palliative care
  • Mentorship Course
Desirable criteria
  • Counselling skills training
  • Post registration courses in ENT/ Head and Neck Cancer Care
  • Working towards MSc

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of managing self and working unsupervised or with minimal supervision for at least 2 years.
  • Worked with ENT or cancer/palliative care patient groups for at least 3 years
  • Ability to deal with stressful situations.
  • Expert in nurse led practice
  • Excellent managerial, leadership and organisational skills
  • Excellent teaching and training skills
  • Able to problem solve and initiate change
  • Able to work across professional team and organisational boundaries
  • Knowledge of trust policies and procedures and ability to translate these into action
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of statistics and report writing
  • Knowledge of symptom management in relation to Head and Neck cancers. Head and Neck cancer care experience

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Knowledge of current management of patients with Head and Neck cancer.
  • Knowledge of national guidance relating to Head and Neck cancer services, and NHS Cancer Plan
  • Knowledge of current clinical and nursing research related to Head and Neck cancers
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to deliver informal and formal lectures at all levels
  • Audit experience
  • Experience in using spreadsheets and databases
  • Experience of change management
  • Understanding of research
